The Nursery | Penelope and Me

I?ve been meaning to post pictures of Genevieve?s nursery for weeks, and I am finally getting around to it! ?These were taken two days before she was born. ?This is the color the room was painted when we moved in. ?At first, I was very unhappy with the color, but it ended up working out with all of the colors I added!

We?ll begin with the crib wall. ?This is the wall with the door into the room.

Crib Wall

With the Play Mat

Now, for some of the details. ?The first detail I will mention are the pom-poms. ?Jennifer was the driving force behind one of my baby showers, and when she plans decorations for events like that, she always tries to pick things that might be able to be used later. ?She did a great job! ?She called me for colors, and the pom-poms ended up matching the room perfectly. ?Mom and I spent an afternoon arranging and rearranging all of the colorful balls until we were pleased with the results.

The next item on that wall I will mention is the owl play mat.

Play Mat

This mat is totally cool! ?My grad-school friend, Ashlee, made it for us. ?She saw something like it in a store, and she decided to expand her sewing skills and make one for Genevieve! ?Ashlee designed it herself and sewed it all together. ?I love it! ?Cooper occasionally claims it as her own, but I know we?ll be using this more and more as Genevieve becomes more mobile.

Coat Hanger

This coat hanger came from Dale and Lisa (Megan?s Mom and Dad). ?Lisa found it and couldn?t resist. ?I love having her little coats on it, and I have also hung notes that the ladies from our church wrote at my first baby shower. ?The notes had prayers and thoughts for sweet miss Genevieve. ?I love reading through them!

The Crib

I am quite proud of how this came together. ?Our crib was given to us by Jill and ?Josh. ?They are quite done with making kids, so they gave us a lot of their kid stuff! ?The paisley-print bumpers and bedskirt also came from them. ?I am SO happy with how the pink fit right it. ?The owl was given to us by Blakely, a friend of mine from our church. ?The blanket, of course, came from Genevieve?s Mimi, who crocheted it especially for our little one. ?The last item I added to this wall was the mobile. ?I had everything else put together when I realized it still needed something, and the mobile made it feel complete.

We?ll move one wall over now to the window wall. ?This window looks out onto the backyard, which means the room usually gets good afternoon light.

Curtains

Folded Curtains

It just dawned on me that I didn?t get a great picture of the ?toy chest? beneath the window. ?There are six square compartments in it that I am able to slip boxes into. ?I have three of them filled with large boxes where I can put her toys. ?In the other empty spaces, I have a few of her stuffed animals, some books, and some of her blankets.

**NOTE: After reading this, Mom sent me the photo I needed! ?She took a picture of the toy chest while she was here. ?We have another one just like it, but vertical, that is in the closet, and that?s what we use for her dresser. ?It?s awesome! ?Here?s the picture Mom sent:

Toy Chest

Now, as for the curtains, I am SO very happy with them. ?Like I said above, I got Genevieve?s paisley crib bedding from Jill and Josh. ?The challenge then became finding pre-made curtains or fabric that I liked to make curtains that would match the crib bedding. ?I searched high and low for pre-made curtains and was unhappy with everything I found. ?At the same time, I searched the fabric stores and wasn?t ever extremely attached to anything I saw there. ?I finally found some home decor fabric that matched better than anything else I had found and was just about to buy it when I went to Target to find a shower curtain for our bathroom. Lo and behold, what should I find but a fabric shower curtain that matched the bedding PERFECTLY! ?Seriously. ?I couldn?t believe it! ?I saved over $50 on two shower curtains compared to what I was going to have to spend on the fabric that didn?t match as well as this did. ?I came home, measured the area, and cut the curtains to size. ?This was my first time attaching and using grommets, and I am so happy with the results. ?I love the way the curtains fold up when they are open, and they slide back and forth really easily. ?This will not be my only time using grommets!

Now, on top of the toy chest I have the ?scary? owl (according to David) that Joann gave to Genevieve and a Scentsy warmer that I bought not too long after we got pregnant. ?I knew I wanted to use shades of teal in the nursery, and this warmer fit the bill perfectly!

The last item I will mention on this wall is the bow frame.

Bow Frame

Technically, this is on the adjacent closet-door wall, but since the closet door stays open on this wall the majority of the time, I?m mentioning it here. ?My sweet friend, Tiffany, started a business called Tenny Toes Bows, and she made this frame and all of the bows for Genevieve. ?If you saw the newborn photos that were taken by our friend Phil Cassell, Tiffany also made the two elegant bows that we used.

Now on to the wall with the closet door and the bookshelf!

Bookshelf Wall

Note: the computer chair is just a stand-in. ?Once we move Genevieve up to her nursery, the rocker that Grandma June gave us will be moved into its rightful place in her room. ?I really loved putting this wall together, mostly because of the beautiful frames that Kara made us.

Owl Frames and ?G? for Genevieve

Each and every one of these owls (there are 64 of them!) are unique. ?Kara made all of them herself, and Grandma June suggested the tilting eyes. ?So cute!

The ?G?

When we were fairly certain we were choosing the name Genevieve, I bought this G from Hobby Lobby. ?It was only a simple brown G at the time, and after putting it up, I knew it needed something. ?I added the sparkly ribbon thread, but that still wasn?t enough. ?To top it off, I asked Tiffany to make a bow for it. ?The cool thing is that she added an alligator clip on the back of it, and I made a connector on the G so that it can be taken off for Genevieve to wear! ?How cool! ?David is excited for when she can wear it.

The next part is the bookshelf.

Bookshelf

For the moment, this is the bookshelf that is being used in sweet Genevieve?s room for the wonderful books people gave her. ?We got this from our church in Lubbock when we needed room for our many books in our tiny apartment. ?:-) ?Eventually, I would like ?a larger one that is darker. ?The bookshelf has already come in handy, though! ?Genevieve and I have spent time reading in her room. ?That is only a tiny bit of years of reading to come. ?(How fun: the first thing we read together was Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the next day I got to watch my nephew?s version of the same story. ?So cute!)

The three owls standing together on books were from our friend, Tony. ?He took a trip to Japan a few weeks ago, and he picked these up for Genevieve. ?There are the three sizes: one for David, one for me, and one for the little one!! ?Cute! ?:-)

Owl from Jill

How great is this: Jill had this made for us before I had even said that I would be using both teal and owls for the nursery. ?She knows me so well! ?I love this.

Bucket Full of Owls

Mom came up with this idea. ?These were the owls that Kara made for our baby shower back home, and they were loved by all! ?I brought some of them home, and Mom used a pink basket from Jennifer to put them in. ?I love how they look with the books!

Now on to the last wall!

Changing Table Wall

We weren?t originally going to get a changing table for her room, but I am now extremely pleased we have it! ?This was given to us by some sweet friends at church that no longer had a need for it. ?Yay! ?You can see our cloth diapers on the middle shelf of the table. ?I?ll be writing a post about them soon. ?I love them!

I?m glad that I added the cabinet on the wall next to the table. ?This was a cabinet we bought to add storage to our itty-bitty bathrooms in our apartments. ?It makes it extremely convenient to grab what we need while we are changing her.

Owl and Frames

This is the last bit that I will explain! ?These frames were from our first baby shower here in town that our friend, Tamara, made for us. ?The frame on the left is a verse ? Psalm 139:16-18. ?You can?t tell in this picture, but the frame also represents David and me. ?There are 0?s and 1?s in yellow representing David?s computer skills, numbers in blue for my math skills, and math symbols in the back in pink. ?I love the attention to detail!! ?(You can?t expect anything less from Tamara, though!) ?The frame on the right has a tree, and everyone at the shower signed the branches of the tree. ?So sweet.

The owl was from my ?San Antonio Grandma,? Maxine. ?She said she was at a craft store and couldn?t resist getting it for us. ?This was just a few days before Genevieve was born, and it happened to match the nursery PERFECTLY! ?I absolutely love it!

The thing I love about Genevieve?s nursery is that it is a picture of the sweet family members and friends that love us. ?So much of what we have in the room came from others, and it all fit together perfectly! ?How cool is that?! ?I am always so happy when I walk into the room. ?It?s the only one in our new house that is basically finished. ?I?m ready to put my decorating skills to the test in the rest of the house!
