It's official: Angola's ruling party wins election

LUANDA, Angola (AP) ? Angola's electoral commission says the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola has won an overwhelming majority of 72 percent of votes with nearly all ballots counted.

That guarantees President Eduardo dos Santos, in power for 33 years, another five years' power in the country rich in oil and diamonds. The biggest opposition party UNITA stands at 18.6 percent of votes, nearly double its win in 2008. A new coalition that unites old enemies from UNITA and figures who defected from the ruling MPLA scored 6 percent of votes from mainly young people.

It was only the second election in 20 years in the country that was a Cold War battlefield for 27 years until 2002. Friday's elections were largely peaceful in the African nation of 21 million people.
