Romney's Comments About Parents, Early Ed ... - Education Week

Earlier this week, NBC's Brian Williams asked Mitt Romney about his plans for early childhood education. Romney didn't spell out any new initiatives; instead, he focused on the role of parents, saying that it can be "extraordinarily important" for one parent to stay home with their child during the early years. More here.

That answer may have made folks who think the federal government should use the bully pulpit to encourage parent responsibility very happy. But it also raised some eyebrows yesterday from panelists at a New America Foundation event in Washington exploring early childhood education and the presidential campaign. Watch it here.

Lisa Guernsey, the director of the early education initiative at the New America Foundation, wondered if Romney would pair his suggestion about parents staying home with a new policy that could make it easier for moms and dads to cover expenses, such as expanding paid family leave.

And Helen Blank, who works on child care issues for the National Women's Law Center, said that many families simply can't make the stay-at-home option work.

"We have a huge number of children growing up in single parent families," she said. Even if the government were able to expand paid family leave, she said, those policies usually cover no more than three months of time off.

"We need high-quality early childhood options," she said. "I still think it's a major need, even with middle-class families. They're buying the kind of childcare that, if they're honest, they're not really happy about."

Folks who weren't at the forum took note of the comment, too. Kevin Carey, the director of the Education Policy program at New America, noted that it could be tough to square Romney's ideas about stay-at-home-parents with his strong support for including a work component in welfare programs.

So what do you think? Are parents the key to successful early childhood education, or should the feds, or other government forces, play a role? And is it best if one parent can stay home during the early years?

Here's a fuller version of Romney's comments on early childhood education to inform your answer. And you can also check out the full transcript here:

WILLIAMS: This is our third year outing, a third year a row for this conference. Early childhood education looms large as you might imagine in this conversation every year. And you know the stats about the achievement gap. You know all that can happen or doesn't happen in a child's life before kindergarten wraps their arms around the child, summer slide is a dynamic that puts kids behind. So, as a result, kids turn 6, 7 years old, they're already falling behind.

Any initiatives you would bring to early childhood education?

ROMNEY: Well, let me note something which I think almost goes without saying, but I will say it nonetheless, I remember being with a group of teachers again in Boston and I said, can you predict which students will stay in school and be successful and those that will drop out? And how early can you predict that? And the teachers all began nodding their heads.

And I said, well, you know, tell me what you have to say. They said, well, I don't know that I want to have this on camera. We had a camera in the room at the time. So the camera left.

And one said this, if a teacher/parent night, a parent/teacher night rather, if the parents show up, then the child will be just fine. If the parents don't show up night after night of parent/teacher conferences, that kid probably won't make it through high school. The involvement of parents, and particularly where there could be two parents, is an enormous advantage for the child.

So both in terms of early education and continuing throughout their career having certainly an advantage to have two parents, but even then to have one parent that stays closely involved with the education of the child and can be at home in those early years of education can be extraordinarily important.

I also do believe that there are many programs that have been highly effective in early education. Right here in New York City, Geoffrey Canada has a program in Harlem that's been just remarkably successful in helping bring young people to a posture where they're ready to learn by the time school starts. And those types of efforts I think should be evaluated one by one, and we should encourage and support those that are most effective.

Colorado Veteran Receives Mortgage-Free Home from Operation Homefront and Chase

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Operation Homefront and Chase presented the keys for a mortgage-free home to a Colorado Springs, Colo. veteran and his family on Thursday, September 20. U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Jesse Bowser and his wife Pauline were given the home through the Homes on the Homefront program, a nationwide program that awards mortgage-free homes to wounded warriors, service members, and their families.

At his July 21 concert at Mile High Stadium, Country music superstar Tim McGraw congratulated the Bowsers on being awarded their home. McGraw also partners with Operation Homefront and Chase as part of his Homefront program.

The family had a great time at the concert, and was thrilled to move into the new home on Thursday.

"I grew up in Colorado and I'm excited to move back. This new home is a real blessing for me and my wife and will help us build a foundation for the future," says Bowser.

In addition to the Army National Guard, Bowser also served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years and the U.S. Navy for four years. As a third-generation veteran, Bowser served in many part of the U.S. and overseas including Australia, the Persian Gulf and Iraq. He retired in May of this year and plans to attend the seminary so that he can help other veterans who may be struggling to transition back to civilian life.

The City of Colorado Springs is excited to welcome the family back to Colorado.

"As more of our men and women return home to our city, it is imperative that we all do that is necessary to ensure these heroes and their families get the support they need so they can once again become a part of our community's fabric. To ensure veterans and their families are connected to necessary resources, the City of Colorado Springs is proud to be a part of the Peak Military Care Network (PMCN)," stated Council President Scott Hente.

"We are thrilled that Operation Homefront has helped bring another hero to Colorado Springs," said Council member Merv Bennett.

"The PMCN is an innovative and holistic approach to meeting the diverse needs of our military members, veterans, and their families," explained Kathleen Hatten with the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. "As another military family now calls Colorado Springs home, we want them and all military families to know that the community of Colorado Springs stands with them, ready to help connect them to educational resources, workforce readiness efforts, and much more."

Operation Homefront's mission is to provide assistance to service members and their families, and is excited to be able to place a family in a city that is willing to help.

"Operation Homefront is thrilled to match the Bowser family with a home in the Colorado Springs," said Jim Knotts, Operation Homefront CEO. "Having lived there as a cadet at the Air Force Academy, I know first hand that Colorado Springs takes great care of their veterans.? What's more, the city recognizes that our military service members are a national asset, and the community is stronger for having them.? Jesse is a great example of a warrior who will continue to serve his country and his community by working with other veterans.? Colorado Springs is lucky to have Jesse and Pauline make their new home there."

Liver cells, insulin-producing cells, thymus can be grown in lymph nodes, team finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Lymph nodes can provide a suitable home for a variety of cells and tissues from other organs, suggesting that a cell-based alternative to whole organ transplantation might one day be feasible, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

In a report recently published online in Nature Biotechnology, the research team showed for the first time that liver cells, thymus tissue and insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, in an animal model, can thrive in lymph nodes despite being displaced from their natural sites.

Hepatitis virus infection, alcoholic cirrhosis and other diseases can cause so much damage that liver transplantation is the only way to save the patient, noted senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm. D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Pathology, Pitt School of Medicine. Children with DiGeorge syndrome lack functional thymus glands to produce essential immune cells, and diabetes can be cured with a pancreas transplant.

"However, the scarcity of donor organs means many people will not survive the wait for transplantation," said Dr. Lagasse, whose lab is at the McGowan Institute. "Cell therapies are being explored, but introducing cells into tissue already ravaged by disease decreases the likelihood of successful engraftment and restoration of function."

In the study, his team tested the possibility of using lymph nodes, which are abundant throughout the body and have a rich blood supply, as a new home for cells from other organs in what is called an "ectopic" transplant.

They injected healthy liver cells from a genetically-identical donor animal into lymph nodes of mice at various locations. The result was an enlarged, liver-like node that functioned akin to the liver; in fact, a single hepatized lymph node rescued mice that were in danger of dying from a lethal metabolic liver disease. Likewise, thymus tissue transplanted into the lymph node of mice that lacked the organ generated functional immune systems, and pancreatic islet cell transplants restored normal blood sugar control in diabetic animals.

"Our goal is not necessarily to replace the entire liver, for example, but to provide sufficient cell mass to stabilize liver function and sustain the patient's life," Dr. Lagasse said. "That could buy time until a donor organ can be transplanted. Perhaps, in some cases, ectopic cell transplantation in the lymph node might allow the diseased organ to recover."

Co-authors of the paper include Junji Komori, M.D., Ph.D., Lindsey Boone, Ph.D., and Aaron DeWard, Ph.D., all of Pitt's Department of Pathology and the McGowan Institute, and Toshitaka Hoppo, M.D., Ph.D., of the McGowan Institute.

How To Put Together Effective Personal Development Strategies ...

You can change your life forever and for the better when you change the way you think, this is the start when it comes to personal development. This article provides helpful tips to get you focused on your self improvement, while improving your life and how you live it.

TIP! Ultimate happiness may lie in assuming a manageable amount of risk. A lot of people find themselves stuck in their comfort zone, because they do not dare take risks and fear rejection.

To grow over the years, you have to have a great attitude. Living life under the burden of bad or negative attitudes will continue to hold you back, and in fact, will undo all your personal improvement efforts. Focus on the positive things in life and how they can help you reach your personal goals.

Start giving other people compliments. If you are kind to other people, you will be kind to yourself.

TIP! Create an emergency fund. It is not good to pile up credit card bills when an unexpected emergency pops up.

Stress is what often brings down happiness. When we are stressed out, it harms us mentally and physically. To start thinking clearly and reaching for calm, purposeful goals, destroy your mind?s stress. Have some time every day when you can relax and meditate in solitude. This refreshing time can improve your self-image and peace.

Many people often have goals that are too broad, when they are trying to grow through self improvement. Try to set a goal that is specific. If you define your goal clearly, it will be easier to achieve it.

TIP! Do you feel like you drink too much alcohol? The harmful ingredients in cigarettes can cause COPD, cancer and a huge list of other diseases. Your body is what you live in every day and therefore consideration for its well being should be a priority.

It?s possible to teach yourself how you can deal with difficult situations without becoming too emotional. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Rhythmic deep breathing will help you regain control and remain self-assured.

It is impossible for you to properly care for the ones you love, unless you take care of yourself first. No matter how much progress you have made in your personal development, always make resting and restoring yourself a top priority.

TIP! Stop worrying. When you worry, you are imagining a horrible situation for yourself that has not yet come to pass, and probably never will.

Always be in a position to take note of any ideas you may have, no matter what your location. Carry a journal or diary with you, everywhere you go. Write down your thoughts in detail, and be sure to put it into action.

Don?t overexert yourself physically when you are trying to achieve your goal. You should always put forth your best effort, but you also need to stay within your limits. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. Trying to achieve a goal at the expense of your body?s well being is hurting your personal development.

TIP! Declaring lowliness is a crucial step in advancing in personal development. The more humble you are, realizing that there is room for growth, the more willing you are to gain knowledge.

Always aim to keep self-discipline a priority as you work on bettering yourself. Learn to maintain control over your thoughts and actions. Conquer desires of the flesh, such as, overeating, lust, greed and drunkenness. However, if you control yourself, these negative desires won?t affect your mental and physical health the way they have done in the past.

There is a great coach behind every champion. It is important to surround yourself with a positive mentor and coach. Everyone is supposed to help show the way to others. It can be difficult, if not downright impossible, for people to reach their goals without the advice and wisdom of experts. Everyone needs a great coach or teacher in their life.

TIP! Improving your life is closely tied to willpower, and a lot can be said for the karma you develop along the way. You should only want the best to happen for others.

Identify the biggest obstacle that is preventing you from succeeding. Sometimes, this can be a difficult job for you to see on your own. Once you can pinpoint your own weaknesses, it is easier to accept them, act on them, and change them. If you are successful in moving obstacles out of your way, you may find that your life?s path is easier to navigate.

One way to improve yourself is to discover and emphasize your strengths, while minimizing your weaknesses. Determine what is important to you. Value the things you love the most and make them very important.

TIP! When you feel anger start to boil over, stop before you react and count to ten. Take a deep breath and think of a peaceful place.

Now you have been given an opportunity to consider several ways to change your negative thinking habits, and work on any character flaws preventing you from living your life to it?s fullest potential. Using these easy tips can help you get started with your personal development, and how to change yourself and your life for the better

Match Making For Boomers: What's With Romantic Love and - Yes

Many young people you see these days have read a lot of romantic fantasy books espousing romantic love and marriage. The usual plot is that before you settle down with Mr right you first have to fall in love with him. They have this unreal perception about love, relationships and marriage. Hollywood has not helped matters either. There are such notions as love at first sight and falling in love before getting into a relationship. May I say this that it is not necessary to wait till you "love" the man before you get married.

In fact it is better for you if you are looking for marriage to enter a relationship with a clear head, knowing exactly what you want rather than having your emotions overwhelm your reasoning in the name of being head over heels in love. One is bound to make costly mistakes under such conditions. If a man that has the right qualities and compatibility comes around, don't wait to have a special feeling before you say yes to his marriage proposal. The truth is as you spend time together in your marriage you will grow to love him. So this is the right pattern- Choose right then fall in love with the right choice. It is popular to fall in "love" with the guy first and hope he turns out right.

This second option has being the ruin of many a woman. What many refer to as love is in reality lust. A perfect test to use in checking if it is love or lust is the "giving" test. If it is love it always gives and the giving is unconditional. Whereas if it is lust it is usually selfish seeking to take or get from the other partner. For many "I love you" means "I desire to control and manipulate you and have you to satisfy my sexual craving!"

The characters of the romantic novels are not real human beings. They are merely the creation of the fantasies of the writers. You live in the real world, so get real! The hot passionate love that comes at first may not really last more than the first few years of marriage. If you are sincerely looking for marriage, you need more than feelings to get you through married life, you need clear headed thinking and a strong commitment. Many folks who have stayed married for several years will tell you that the hot passionate love of youthful days never really last long. The foundation of much of this is the physical looks which eventually fade with time. When outward beauty fades what then happens to such a relationship that was built on love based on physical attraction?

Let me illustrate: Mary Anne(true name with-held) wanted to quit dating altogether. She was 40 when I met her and had been dating continuously since she was 16 - and she was sick to death of the dating scene. Hers is a story of a futile search for the perfect love. In the last 21 years, she'd had only three boyfriends that lasted more than a year, and the rest lasted only a few weeks to a few months apiece. She was so depressed because all her friends had already gotten married and she was the only one who remained single.

When she opened up I realized that she went out of her way to make the guys she dated to fall in hot romantic love with her in the hope that it would turn out into marriage. She ended up in bed with quite a few but they disappeared as soon as they went to bed with her! Though she maintained the attitude that there was something wrong with all men in general - deep inside, she felt there was something wrong with her. On pointing out the difference between love and lust and the fact that she can get married without going into sensual relationships she has turned out the better for it. Today, she is now happily married. Am I advocating marriage without love? No what I am advocating is love nurtured through marriage.

(AP) ? Seniors enrolled in seven of the 10 most popular Medicare prescription drug plans will be hit with double-digit premium hikes next year if they don't shop for a better deal, says a private firm that analyzes the highly competitive market.

The report Monday by Avalere Health is a reality check on the Obama's administration's upbeat pronouncements. Back in August, officials had announced that the average premium for basic prescription drug coverage will stay the same in 2013, at $30 a month.

The administration's number is accurate as an overall indicator for the entire market, but not very helpful to consumers individually since it doesn't reflect price swings in the real world.

"The average senior is going to benefit by carefully scrutinizing their situation, because every year the market changes," Avalere President Dan Mendelson said. Avalere crunched the numbers based on bid documents that the plans submitted to Medicare.

The report found premium increases for all top 10 prescription drug plans, known as PDPs. However, the most popular plan ? AARP MedicareRx Preferred ? is only going up 57 cents per month nationally, to $40.42 from the current $39.85.

The seven plans with double-digit premium increases were: the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan (23 percent); First Health Part D Premier (18 percent); First Health Part D Value Plus (17 percent); Cigna Medicare Rx Plan One (15 percent); Express Scripts Medicare-Value (13 percent); the HealthSpring Prescription Drug Plan (12 percent); and Humana Enhanced (11 percent).

Another two plans in the top 10 also had single-digit increases. They were the SilverScript Basic (8 percent) and WellCare Classic (3 percent).

On the plus side for consumers, a new low-cost plan entered the market. Premiums for the AARP MedicareRx Saver Plus Plan will average $15 a month nationally, although it won't be available everywhere. That's $3.50 less than the current low-cost leader, the Humana Walmart plan, whose premiums are rising to $18.50.

The new AARP plan is run by UnitedHealth Group Inc., the nation's largest health insurance company. United pays AARP for the right to use its name on a range of Medicare insurance products, a successful business strategy that has proven lucrative for both partners. When Humana and Walmart teamed up to offer their low-cost plan in 2011, United felt the competition.

"There is a real focus on the premium in this market," Mendelson said. "If a plan fields an offering with a low premium, it knows it can capture a significant number of customers."

Medicare spokesman Brian Cook did not dispute the Avalere estimates. "We continue to encourage seniors to shop around and find the plan that works best for them," he said.

Medicare's open enrollment season starts Oct. 15, and beneficiaries have a wide variety of choices of taxpayer-subsidized private prescription plans. Seniors and family members can use the online Medicare Plan Finder to input individual prescription lists and find plans in their area that cover them.

About 90 percent of Medicare's nearly 50 million beneficiaries have some form of drug coverage, with more than 17 million enrolled in private plans through the prescription drug program.

President Barack Obama's 2010 health care law is improving prescription drug plans by gradually closing the coverage gap known as the doughnut hole for those with high prescription drug costs.

The Avalare numbers did have one silver lining for the Obama administration. When the projections are tweaked to account for seniors switching to lower-cost coverage, premiums for 2013 are likely to remain steady.

Separately, the administration recently announced that average premiums for Medicare Advantage insurance plans will barely inch up next year on average, while enrollment in the private medical plans will continue to rise. Many Medicare Advantage plans also combine prescription drug coverage in one package deal.

But the biggest premium announcement is yet to come. Virtually all seniors pay the Part B premium for outpatient care, including those with traditional Medicare as well as those in private plans. Currently $99.90 a month, the Part B premium it is expected to rise next year by less than $10.

Walk your way to financial (and physical) health

Walking is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise, Hamm writes. Best of all: It's free.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / September 26, 2012

All through dating and marriage, Sarah and I have taken pretty regular walks together. We?ll just stroll through the neighborhood we?re living in, looking for interesting things to observe and just talking about life.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Even now, we still do this, though our walks often involve three children tagging along with us.

These walks are a pretty key component of the success of our marriage. They?re simply valuable in many different respects.

For starters,?they?re free.?It doesn?t cost you a dime to open up your front door and go for a stroll.

For another,?it?s a great way to get some fresh air and low-impact exercise.?You?re outside moving around, which is a great thing, particularly for the many Americans with desk jobs.

The big reason, though, is that?it gives you a great opportunity to have an uninterrupted conversation.

Sarah and I solve our problems during walks together. We talk about the things that concern us and together we work through solutions to the problems.

Sarah and I talk about the things going on in our separate lives. We talk about professional concerns, about things we?ve learned during the day, and about our friendships and connections with relatives.

We plan for the future on our walks. We discuss what our lives will be like in ten years and what we need to do to get there.

Yes, with young children around, we don?t get to walk as often as we?d like. Instead, we?ll have some of these conversations while walking with our children, or we?ll have them after the kids are asleep and we?re sitting together on the deck.

Walking together is free, it provides fresh air and gentle exercise, it gets you out in the community or in nature, and it gives you a powerful opportunity to communicate with your partner. It?s something I?m always happy to do.

This post is part of a yearlong series called ?365 Ways to Live Cheap (Revisited),? in which I?m revisiting the entries from my book ?365 Ways to Live Cheap,? which is available?at Amazon?and at bookstores everywhere.?

Low Mortgage Rates, Ayn Rand & Why 80% Won't Buy or Refinance ...

feature photo

Mortgage rates have hit record lows and yet a majority of those who potentially could refinance and save money will not do so.

?Four out of five Americans are unwilling to buy homes or refinance their mortgages, despite record-low interest rates,? according to a recent Harris poll. ?Only workers between the ages of 18 and 34 were slightly more likely to invest in housing over the next year.?

Just last week the rate for a 30-year fixed-rate loan sank to 3.49 percent according to Freddie Mac. The that?s the lowest rate Freddie Mac has ever recorded and less than even the 4.09% recorded a year ago, itself a ridiculously-low rate by historic standards.

Despite rates which ought to set off a massive refinancing trend many borrowers refuse to get new loans even though it?s in their best interest. The reason ? according to a poll done by Harris Interactive for?Union Plus, the benefits arm of the AFL-CIO ? is that ?53 percent of respondents have major concerns about the economy ? they fear job loss. ?Eighty three percent of respondents expressed concern that ?closing costs for purchasing or refinancing a home are too high.??

?With only 18 percent of working families willing to invest in buying new homes, what this poll tells us, first and foremost, is that we need to help working Americans feel confident about investing in housing,? said Union Plus President?Leslie Tolf.

The reluctance of the working man and woman to enter the housing market, find a new home or refinance the one they have reflects a plain uncertainty about the marketplace.

Marketplace Stability

While the housing market has clearly shown signs of improvement during the past year there is the problem that unemployment remains high. For working people ? including union members ? marketplace stability is a more valuable commodity than rising home prices.

The reality is that the housing market works very well when everyone is finding success. We want entry-level buyers so they will purchase a first house. We want people who are selling that first house to move up and buy a better property so that the middle class can itself move up and find an even better home.

In other words the middle-class can?t move up unless there are replacement owners for the properties which those in the middle now own. It thus becomes very important if only as a matter of middle-class self-interest to assure that entry-level buyers have both the dollars and the confidence they need to enter the housing market.

That 47 Percent

The current political debate has within it an element which suggests that a large proportion of the American public is simply delighted to obtain housing assistance, public welfare and food stamps. Such an assertion assumes that individuals have no dignity, do not want independence and are positively joyful to receive government assistance.

Indeed, according to the thinking of ?Ayn Rand?we should let such people rot. As she explained,??if any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject.?

But speak to people who are struggling and the first thing they?ll tell you is that they want to better.

No less important many of those who are seen as ?poor? are actually ?working poor.? They go to work every day and they?re not asking for a handout. They want to do better and as a society we should help with education and assistance in tough times. Even those who oppose altruism should favor such help because it?s in their self-interest to do so.

After all, the only way a poor person is going to buy that middle-class house is if they?re poor no more.

Life and Death and Every Beautiful Thing In-Between. ? Cupcakes ...

Death
Annie died in my dreams last night.

I wasn?t totally dreaming. I was sort of awake. Sort of asleep. And I knew it wasn?t real- still- I couldn?t seem to stop crying and playing out this horrific scene in my head.

It?s not the first time I?ve had the dream. And Annie?s not the first one to be a victim to my mind?s imagination.

I can remember having the dream as far back as five-years-old. Somebody I love dying. Me being at their funeral. Near their body. Crying in my half-awake, half-asleep state wondering if this was normal or if my imagination were especially cruel?

I am not sure if I was simply born this way or what- but death has been at the forefront of my mind since I was a little girl. While my sisters played house and school in the woods, I found sticks and studied the dead critters I stumbled upon. And when news of a real death came in and others cried, I found myself wondering how they died and if they knew they were dying and if they were scared or if they were ok.

Perhaps the roots lie in my vivid imagination. And perhaps if my parents had been bankers or shoe-salesmen, it wouldn?t have been so present. But, when I was little my dad was a police officer and was serving in the military and my mom was a minister. Between the two of them, I saw (or overheard) my fair share of people?s stories of life and death. Drunk driving accidents while dad was working the night shift. Suicide of a church member. Babies that didn?t make it and cancer that couldn?t be beat. ?For some reason, these stories effected me more deeply than my sisters. I carried them- each one wounding my heart a little more- aching over the brokenness in the world.

No one likes to talk about death. (In fact- I will be surprised if anyone is still reading this crazy girl?s ramblings.)

Death is often the ultimate reminder of the cruelty of this world and the one thing that we can?t fix or beat. Like the cloud that hovers over Eeyore?s head, Winnie the Pooh?s infamously pessimistic friend, death hovers over each one of us. But most people have the ability to tune it out, as if the cloud were not real or it belonged to someone else or would never actually open up and rain on them. Some people simply don?t think about it- and I envy that.

For a long time, I wished I was one of those people. The people who don?t wake up everyday and taste death; who don?t know that there is a cloud hanging over them.

But somewhere along the way I came to accept it as my fate. I live in the tension of the living and the dead.

I have since I was a little girl.

I see it everyday. Life and death. And thank God I saw it as a kid and have been working hard (keeping therapists and pastors around the country in business!)- to wrap my heart and soul around what to do with it-

because no one tells you that once you create art- it will work its way into someone?s story- and you will be invited into that person?s story- and you will see life and death closer than you ever have- and you will need to know what to do with that-

what to do with the thing that hovers.

?

I?ve been
in more stories than I ever dreamed was possible.?

After every show. Each day they come. Email. Facebook. Twitter. Even snail mail. Hope Now was played at this child?s funeral or this momma?s wake. This Little Light of Mine was a baby?s only song heard in this world and gave a man the courage to keep going in his hospital bed. What Do I Know Holy was the song they listened to as they made their way to heaven. How this sister died on her way to college and this one died because she didn?t realize how much alcohol she was really drinking and this one died on a school field trip.

Every. Single. Day. They are there.

Babies that miscarried and finally- the miracle child that came and stayed. Battles against deadly addictions won. Brain tumors beat. Marriages saved. Depression fought back. Suicide attempts reversed. Babies that live 2 months instead of 15 minutes- science and doctors defied- life brimming out of inevitable death. Flowers blooming out of sheer dirt.

?

In Between
I am grateful that my sweet Savior knew that one day I would stand at a table and take the hands of the broken, embrace them in a hug and do the best of my ability to laugh, cry, cuss, grieve, smile, listen, listen and listen as they tell me about their journey through the heart wrenching valleys and mountains of this world.

I often say that I don?t care if I ever stand on another stage again and sing. Singing is not why I got into this whole thing. In fact, in the early days I really struggled with being a ?christian musician.? Playing in swanky mega-churches was a far cry from where I thought I would end up- an inner city slum in Africa or Mexico. How could autographing a 6th graders arm really qualify as ministry?

Little did I know- one day that sixth grader comes home and finds life as they know it upside down- and in their utter grief they head to their closet- and they listen to music. And all of a sudden- I am a tiny part of their story.

So somewhere towards then end of my time with Addison Road, it all began to make sense to me. This is exactly what God made me for. Even as a little girl- God was preparing my heart and soul to see life, death and every beautiful thing in between.

To be sure- living in the tension of life and death has its negative effects on me. For instance- I cry in bed while dreaming a not-real-dream that my daughter has died. Or I ask my best friends, early on in our relationships, if they are going to murder me? And I?ve come to find that this sort of question wigs people out. Sorry, Aubrey. And Ryan. And Lauren. I cannot think of myself as an old lady- nor can I think of Annie as a grown adult with kids. Something in me won?t let me dream that far down the road- I tend to err on the side of ?I probably won?t make it that long.? And, of course, I?d much rather have dreams about grandbabies than my daughter?s final moments. There are certainly dark moments when death is so close to your lips.

But those things aside- there is an upside to living in the tension of life and death because you come face to face with life and you have to choose: life or death. There is a way to be dead even when your body is alive. There is a way to be kind of alive even if your heart beats strong and steady. There is a way to have a body detached from a soul.

And then there is a way to live that God offers throughout the Bible-

abundant life.

?Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life?? Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT.

Somewhere in the midst of all this thinking about death- grasping how real and how close it actually is- I have heard Jesus whisper time and time again to me, ?Oh that you would choose life Jenny.?

Oh, that we would choose life.

Life
I care little about money. I care little about success. I care little about small inconveniences; the size of my house; the length of the line in front of me at Starbucks or the bank; or the plans that always seem to change.

I care much about my husband. My little girl. My parents. My sisters. My friends. And all other sorts of people. I over-indulge on snuggling with Annie at night, even though it?s technically not the way you are supposed to teach a child to sleep. I throw ?happy parties? and invite my girl friends to have cupcakes and wine and write cards to people they love but have forgotten to thank. I lay in the grass. I get my hands dirty. I mess up a LOT. I sing out loud and whistle and take millions of pictures and drink lots of wine and sit on my front porch and listen to birds and crickets and I worship. I worship Jesus a lot. I love Scripture. I give hugs- I love too much- and I love too hard- I ride roller coasters when I can- scream at refs during football games- read books to learn as much as I can- help people as often as possible and smile a lot. I like to be interrupted by people?s stories, by strangers, by coffee that goes too long with a new friend, or by my husband?s constant desire to show me how the iPhone has yet again changed his life.

I live like I am dying. Because even though I am not- it is there- Life and Death and Every Beautiful Thing In-Between. And while I have the privilege-

I choose life.

So you want to know the story behind my new song, Heaven Waits for Me? That is it.

When you live with death hovering over you- you have two choices about the way you will live life now?

you can choose to live with the fear of death, hovering over you, stealing your ?joy, robbing your happiness, defining how you carefully live and protect each day-

or you can just live life-

Abundantly. Fully. Whole-heartedly. The way Jesus did in the scriptures. Pouring himself out- and being filled up. Pouring out. Filling up. Never losing site of God the Father and the eternity He would spend in a place where death has no sting, but also embracing every moment of his life on earth. Loving. Healing. Caring. Praying. Resting. Time with friends. Time at weddings. Time at parties. Time with Lepers. Hookers. Thiefs. Religious people. Time with His own Father.

Jesus lived a full life- every single day, with every single breath- he chose to show us what it looks like to live in the tension of life and death?

and what it looks like to do both well.

And that?s what Heaven Waits for Me is all about- living in the tension of life and death- and embracing every beautiful thing in between.

Is Free and Traditional PR Distribution Still Relevant? - Modern Dignity

Home ? Internet ? Is Free, Traditional PR Distribution Still Relevant?

Is Free and Traditional PR Distribution Still Relevant

The way in which businesses communicate with each other and customers, both current and prospective, has drastically changed in recent years. The digital age is upon us and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook lead the way, closely followed by the impact of online networking and SEO. These radical changes means that companies no longer need to create press releases to distribute to journalists with the hope of publication. All this leaves one question unanswered; ?Is free and traditional PR still relevant??

?

Here are some great reasons to make you aware of the positive benefits traditional PR can provide you and your business with.

It?s credible ?

Spreading the word and getting the business noticed through the traditional channels like newspapers and magazines is still extremely beneficial and can seriously boost their profile and public perception. This is especially effective when press releases are displayed in reliable and well-respected sources.

?

Strategic positioning
Traditional PR provides the benefit of expert positioning which can ensure a business and its news is seen by the people they want to see it, within their desired industry. For example, if you ran a pharmaceuticals business, having your latest news or information displayed in a medical or health related magazine or supplement would be highly constructive. Free or traditional PR gives that luxury.

?

Gets the brand noticed
Although social media and online blogging provides extensive distribution channels and routes to the consumer, the same can also be said for the traditional methods. If releases are issued within respectable and credible magazines and newspapers, it means the reach is varied and the amount of possible readers and consumers is huge, leading to high levels of exposure for the brand.

?

Brand reputation
A credible press release that shows a brand in a good light is essential to boost reputation. For example, if the business was going through a difficult period or the public?s perception of the brand was poor, a positive press release within a good source could work wonders to improve opinion.

?

Limited competition
As the digital age has swept the globe and social media being the driving force, it?s easy to see why so many businesses have been enticed by it and are using it to get their brand noticed. This however means that the traditional channels are being neglected and that many companies can use it without the fear of excessive rivalry and vying for exposure.

Sunrise Mayor: Toughen Daycare Center Law To Require More Disclosure To Parents

By Michael J. Ryan, Mayor Of Sunrise

At four-years-old,?Jordan Coleman?was old enough to know something wasn?t right, but not old enough to protect himself.

It was a hot August afternoon in Florida.? Maybe he was asleep when the ?staff? of a Sunrise daycare center forgot him in the van.? If so, he likely woke sweaty and to a stifling, choking heat.? Alone.? No one else in the van.? Panic would have set in.

Jordan likely would have stopped sweating as the natural defenses meant to cool his body began to fail.? Hyperventilating, he would have progressed to confusion, and ultimately unconsciousness.

How long did it take? What were the final moments like before he slipped into unconsciousness? ?As a loving son, did he cry out to his Mother?

Yuri Milner: 40 Million Retail Jobs Are Going To ... - Business Insider

Russian internet investor Yuri Milner had an ominous prediction for the retail industry and its many workers at a conference earlier this week in Ukraine.

He said that there will be ?a pretty significant job loss in the retail sector to the tune of 40 million jobs in the next 20 years," according to Chrystia Freeland at Reuters.

What's going to cause that?

Milner estimates that right now, 6 percent of retail sales is done on the web, but that number will spike to 20 percent in the next decade. It will be 50 percent in two decades, he said.

Now, there would be one huge benefit for the global economy if the retail world keeps going online. Milner anticipates that we'd see an 8 percent increase in efficiency.?

Still, 40 million jobs? It may not be as bad as it sounds.

Milner thinks that many of those disappearing low-wage retail jobs would be replaced by better-paying tech jobs.
