Online Speech Therapy Helps Union County School System Better Serve Its Special Needs Students

PresenceLearning provides rural Georgia-based district with cost-effective solution to fill gaps in speech therapy services

SAN FRANCISCO, August 27, 2012 ? To overcome the costs and time constraints associated with speech language pathologists (SLPs) traveling to the district?s extremely rural school locations and to lessen the case load for current SLPs in the district, UnionCountySchoolSystem in northern Georgia adopted PresenceLearning, the leading provider of live online speech therapy services to K-12 students. After a successful pilot of PresenceLearning?s services in May 2012, the district will start using live online speech therapy this fall for a portion of the district?s students receiving speech language services.

?We received great feedback from students, parents, current SLPs and district staff after piloting PresenceLearning last school year,? said Kristy Chapman, special education director of the Union County Board of Education. ?Given our rural location, the virtual access to SLPs, in addition to the privacy, availability and ease-of-use of the services, makes PresenceLearning a great fit for our district.?

Located in the Appalachian Mountains in upper northeast corner of Georgia, Union County consists of six schools ? one primary school, one elementary school, one middle school, one high school, one K12 school and one alternative education school. The district currently has approximately 2,700 K12 students, including approximately 350 special needs students with individualized education programs (IEPs). This coming school year, PresenceLearning will be the primary speech therapy service provider for a selected group of elementary through high school students.

?PresenceLearning allows us to serve a portion of our students with special needs without having to overload our SLPs,? said Chapman. ?We would love to expand our district?s use of PresenceLearning to more students in the future.?

PresenceLearning offers innovative, onlinespeechtherapy that draws from a nationwide network of highly-qualified, certified therapists who are available whenever and where ever they are needed. Through PresenceLearning, schools are able to offer an effective speech therapy program that provides improved therapy outcomes and favorable cost comparisons to traditional speech therapy programs. Additional advantages with PresenceLearning include better access to technical specialists as well as culturally and linguistically diverse speech language pathologists.

PresenceLearning currently delivers more than 5,000 successful online speech therapy sessions a month to public, charter and virtual schools nationwide.

?The quality and variety of the selections you will find on EducationViews.org is second-to-none on the internet today. Since 1997 we have been providing this service at no cost to education professionals, the public in general and policy makers. Hope you enjoy the articles and commentary. Please forward us to your friends and associates. EducationViews.org is maybe the most effective way to transforming educators. The daily email offers a direct and easy way for busy teachers to grow philosophically. I was skeptical, but once you open the email and decide to read a story, you are hooked and it becomes a daily ritual to check out what?s happening. Educating teachers as to what is really going on in the schools opens up a new worldview and vision of thinking most have not been exposed to. The end result, better informed teachers who have a more effective understanding of the principles that make academic achievement a reality. Great job. The more email addresses of educators you get on your list, the bigger the impact and the more kids you will positively influence.

Pakistan threatened by religious, sectarian violence - Pakistan Today

ISLAMABAD?-?The Pakistani state is threatened by those who commit violence and murder in the name of religion, a leading cleric said on Thursday at a roundtable conference titled ?Reversing the tide of sectarian violence in Pakistan? organized by the Jinnah Institute.

While condemning the murder of unarmed civilians of any sect or religion, Tahir Ashrafi, chairman of the All Pakistan Ulema Council, distributed copies of a compilation of fatwas (decrees) by Pakistan?s leading religious schools. He urged the organs of the state to clamp down on the extremist outfits, particularly fundraising activities of banned militant outfits.

Speaking on the occasion, security analyst Imtiaz Gul said that the killing of Shia Muslims was threatening the very foundations of Pakistan. He said that political actors and the state were more interested in political mileage rather than curbing the killings. He claimed that there was a ?radical mindset? within the judiciary and bureaucracy that provides protection and patronage to extremist outfits. He cited examples in which land allocated to green belts in Islamabad, was being handed over to seminaries and mosques despite the fact that legally no construction was permitted on that land. ?Until we are able to finish the culture of protecting and patronizing the groups involved in spreading sectarian hatred, we will not be able to end the growing levels of faith-based violence in Pakistan,? he said.

Another speaker, Dr Ayesha Siddiqa, pointed out the weakness of the state in preventing the killings of Shias. ?The State?s capacity to manage policing and public prosecution departments in an effective way was a key issue in Shia killings,? she said, urging for the empowerment of law enforcement agencies so they could take on powerful armed groups responsible for sectarian violence. She further said that the civil society in Pakistan should engage with Islamic jurisprudence and discourse and find inherent messages of peace and pluralism in order to change public mindset on the issue of sectarianism, violence, terrorism and militancy.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Human Rights Fawad Chaudhry reiterated the government?s commitment to fight extremism and militancy in the country. He also highlighted the risks faced by public officials in the line of duty. He admitted that an atmosphere of fear exists in the society due to recent violence. He also claimed that the current parliament had enacted unprecedented legislation on human rights.

Human Rights activist Tahira Abdullah said the lack of unity in civil society was also an important factor behind sectarian violence. She said that the blasphemy case against juvenile Christian girl Rimsha Masih was a ?test case? for the Pakistani state and civil society. She urged all members of the civil society to come out and support Rimsha in order to show that the average Pakistanis are united in their resolve to stand up for minorities and vulnerable groups.

What Are The Signs Of Menopause? | Jackie's Women's Interest ...

That?s the question that lingers most in elderly women?s minds particularly after some of the initially ignored symptoms begin to intensify. As age catches up with women, their bodies fail to produce sufficient hormones leading to hormonal imbalance which is often characterized by a number of menopausal signs including night sweats, hot flashes, loss of libido, weight gain and exhaustion.

Oracle Cards and Author Platforms ? Hay House Writers' Workshop ...

I was invited to attend the Hay House Writer?s Workshop this week in Sydney and the catch phrase of the day was author platform. In fact, if you assumed that a writing workshop run by the world?s leading Mind Body Spirit publisher would be filled with fluffy creativity exercises and meditations to help you write from the soul, you probably haven?t been paying attention to the sophisticated way Hay House go about their business.

Yes, there was no doubting the positive energy in the 900-strong audience ?and yes, everyone was delighted receive two free oracle cards with miraculously appropriate messages about fulfilling dreams and unleashing your creativity ? but the overwhelming message of the workshop was professional not spiritual. Speaker after speaker highlighted the importance of preparing a marketing plan and devising an author platform strategy to build your readership before you attempt to publish your book.

So what exactly is an author platform?

As the author you are the best person to sell your book and you need to be able to connect to your readers and potential readers to generate interest and create a loyal following. There are many, many channels that you can use to reach your audience, including websites, blogs, social media, television talk shows, radio interviews, article writing, media releases, speaking tours, book signings, message boards, workshops, consulting, professional networks, celebratory endorsements, charity work, product branding, advertising and so on. Your author platform is the combination of methods you have set up to connect and interact directly with your audience. A powerful platform is able to efficiently reach a large, targeted audience and allows two-way communication and interaction between authors and readers.

The concept of author-centred book marketing is at the core of the entire Hay House publishing strategy. Their author programme is best practice and writers and publishers from all genres can learn a lot from the sophisticated platforms they have developed to ensure that Hay House authors are able to connect to their readers and grow a fan base.

The Writers? Workshops are a perfect example of the end-to-end focus of the Hay House author programme. Not only do these workshops put high profile Hay House authors in direct contact with their most passionate readers, they also allow Hay House to groom potential new authors by training them to think positively about their author platform and marketing plan well before they ever submit a book for publication. All new book submissions to Hay House are already judged heavily against the author?s ability to promote their work and the Writers? Workshops are helping to set the standard and lift the quality of the submissions they receive.

Here are some of the key messages and lessons I took from the speakers at the workshop:

Reid Tracy ? President Hay House

?Once the publisher has read the Overview (of your book proposal) and is interested in the book, the first thing they are going to turn to is your Marketing Plan and Author Platform?

Reid Tracy has been President of Hay House for more than 20 years and has been involved in the selection of nearly all the new title submissions in that time. So when he says that your marketing plan and author platform are crucial to a publisher?s decision, you know he?s speaking from direct experience. He also advises writers putting together their book proposal to put all their best ideas into the first book and make it a success ? don?t keep a knockout concept up your sleeve for the sequel or you may miss the chance to use it altogether. Go for broke and trust in your own ability to come up with fresh ideas. Once the first book is published you?ll be amazed how much feedback from your audience can help inspire content for your next book.

Leon Nacson ? Managing Director Hay House Australia

Leon is an author in his own right although he didn?t come to writing naturally, having struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia at school. His first book was written entirely by transcription so he never had to write anything down at all. His experience shows that nothing needs get in the way of a great idea. If you are having difficulty with any stage of the process, from putting pen to paper to fixing your grammar or devising a marketing plan, then get the help you need: invest in voice-to-text software; hire an editor; or consult a business coach ? whatever you need to help turn that original idea out of your head and into a book.

The Art of Extreme Self-care

?Publishers and editors look through trade journals and magazines searching for new writers?

Cheryl was at the forefront of the Life Coaching movement, being one of the first 20 life coaches in the world. She used strategic media releases at the time to get articles written about herself and the burgeoning Life Coaching industry in a popular Mind Body Spirit Magazines. One article in particular created huge publicity for Cheryl and gained the attention of the key publishers and editors in her field. This ensured that her book proposals were taken much more seriously and put her in a strong position before even writing her first book.

Rachael Bermingham ? Author of the 4 Ingredients Cookbook

4 Ingredients: Fast, Fresh and Healthy by Rachael Bermingham & Kim McCosker

?You can have the best book on the face of the Earth but if no one knows about it, it?s going to crash ? The author needs to inject themselves into the book and the marketing.?

Rachael?s first book was the self-published 4 Ingredients Cookbook which baffled booksellers and publishers across the country with its incredible mass market success. The key behind Rachael and co-author Kim McCosker?s success was an unwavering belief in their book and perseverance with their marketing strategy. This strategy focused around the realisation that the best way to reach their target audience (Aussie mums) was to be featured on the top rated current affairs programme on national TV. Rachael?s determination not to take no for an answer eventually paid off and the publicity they received from that first show gave them the momentum they needed to launch an entire business around the 4 Ingredients brand.

Rachael now does a lot of coaching and workshopping for writers and her ?always believe in your book? and ?No only means no today? messages have inspired a large number of self published authors. It?s an attitude that all self published authors need to take to heart. Remember though, believing in your book really means believing in the idea of your book and should never stop you from doing everything you can to make the book as good as it can be. Similarly, not taking no for an answer shouldn?t stop you from recognising and acting upon constructive advice and feedback that can often accompany a rejection ? sometimes No means Not now but maybe ?

Bronnie Ware ? Author of The Top Five Regrets of the Dying

The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bonnie Ware

The genesis of Bronnie?s book was an article she wrote for her blog in 2009 entitled Regrets of the Dying. The post summarised some observations she had made in her time working in palliative care but was not central to her new career or written with the intention to publish beyond her own blog. However, something about the article ? the poignancy and simplicity of the message perhaps ? struck a chord with readers and it slowly began to spread by word of mouth and cross posting. Six months after it was initially posted the article was discovered by someone at the Huffington Post, then it was picked up by the Guardian and suddenly 1000 hits a week turned into a hundred thousand.

After failing to find sign with a publisher Bronnie decided to self publish*. Her original blog post was central to her marketing strategy and she began to insist that anyone cross-posting or linking her article also include her author biography to ensure that she received credit and generated publicity for the book. By ensuring that all of the interest generated by the article led people to her book she was able to drive huge sales through Amazon and grab the attention of Hay House, who subsequently offered her a publishing deal.

Setting up your own author platform

As you can see from the examples above, there is no single best way to set up an author platform. Every author and every book will have a different audience and certain channels will work better than others. There are some general principles that are always good to keep in mind, however, and I will address some of these in an upcoming post in my series on Self Publishing so stay tuned.

?

* Bronnie?s publishing journey is a very interesting case as she represents one of the first success stories from Hay House?s new self publishing division, Balboa Press. She is one of seven Balboa Press authors (out of 1100 total) who have been offered contracts with Hay House after demonstrating strong sales. This ?Trade Publisher with Self-Publishing Division? model is being explored by a number of traditional publishers as vanity presses are becoming a more legitimate option in the digital age. I have already discussed vanity presses in general terms in a previous post and I will delve into the Balboa Press model in more detail in a follow up article.

Former Mishawaka wrestling coach won't be charged

Darrick Snyder, the former Mishawaka High School wrestling coach, won't face charges in a sexual assault case from 2 years ago.

A wrestler on Snyder?s team had reportedly been sexually assaulted by some teammates. Six of those wrestlers pleaded guilty or were found guilty in juvenile court.

The prosecutor says with those cases concluded, they have looked at all the evidence and statements and don't believe there is sufficient evidence to charge Snyder with failing to report or interfering with reporting.

In regards to the failure to report charge, ?There is insufficient evidence to prove Coach Snyder knew of the sexual nature of the event?? according to a news release from the prosecutor?s office. ?There are significant inconsistencies among the various accounts of what may have been related to the coach after the event and discrepancies in the various interviews and trial testimony of the victim such that this charge cannot be proven, beyond a reasonable doubt.?

In regards to the interfering with reporting and obstruction of justice charges, "The evidence gathered from a single witness is insufficient to charge the coach with these crimes as that witness later acknowledged that he did not tell the truth to investigators during his initial interview with the SVU detectives."

Snyder resigned earlier this year and now works in Brownsburg, Indiana.?He was a highly successful coach at Mishawaka, twice leading the Cavemen to Indiana state wrestling titles.

Exclusive: Pentagon threatens legal action over bin Laden book

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon warned on Thursday that it was considering legal action against a former U.S. Navy SEAL for material breach of non-disclosure agreements with his his first-hand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a letter obtained by Reuters, and subsequently released by the Pentagon, the Pentagon's top attorney also warned that it was also considering legal options against anyone "acting in concert" with the author.

The letter, addressed to "Mark Owen," the pseudonym under which the book was written, identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy that legally committed him to never divulge classified information.

"You are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed," the letter by Jeh Johnson, the Pentagon's General Counsel, said.

"The Department of Defense is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation."

U.S. officials said last week they were surprised by the book, which was not vetted by government agencies to ensure that no secrets were revealed.

The book has received widespread media coverage and the Pentagon letter noted that some copies have already been released, even ahead of the book's formal release next week.

"Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements," the letter warned.

Earlier this week, the author said in a statement from his publisher that the book was written "with respect for my fellow service members while adhering to my strict desire not to disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

But many in the special operations community have privately expressed disappointment in recent days over the book and the publicity it has received.

The author now faces threats against his life. An official al Qaeda website last week posted a photograph and the real name of the former Navy commando, calling him "the dog who murdered the martyr Sheikh Osama bin Laden."

How to keep fast 802.11n Wi-Fi speeds by switching old iOS devices to Bluetooth connections

Not all iOS device Wi-Fi speeds are created equal. If your family has a mix of devices, like an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod touch 3, it can be difficult to get maximum performance from your Wi-Fi router. The iPad can do fast 802.11n on the relatively clear 5GHz frequency. The iPhone 4S can do fast 802.11n, but only on the more cluttered 2.4GHz frequency. The iPod touch can only do slower 802.11b/g, and only on 2.4GHz. Even if you have a dual-band router, like Apple's latest AirPorts, even as the iPad zips along at 802.11n on 5Ghz, the slower iPod touch or even an iPhone 3GS will force the iPhone 4S down to 802.11b/g on 2.4GHz. So what's a geek to do?

If you have a desktop computer or server that stays on most of the time, you can set up Bluetooth tethering for your older devices, getting them off Wi-Fi and letting your 802.11n devices speed along unhindered. It's a bit of a workaround, and your Bluetooth-connected devices will be limited to 20mbs, but the slower slows will also give you faster fasts on your more modern devices. For me, that's a great tradeoff. If you agree, here's how to do it on OS X Mountain Lion.

On you iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Turn Bluetooth to On.

On your Mac:

  1. Launch System Preferences .
  2. Click on Network.
  3. Ensure that you have a Bluetooth PAN device in your left hand column. (If not, add one.)
  4. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  5. Click on Sharing.
  6. Enable Internet Sharing.
  7. Share your connection via Wi-Fi (or if wired, via ethernet)
  8. Enable the Bluetooth PAN option.
  9. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  10. Click on Bluetooth.
  11. Click on the + button to set up a new device
  12. Wait for the wizard to discover it, then pair your iPod touch.

Back on your iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Tap on the newly created Bluetooth connection.

That's it. Now your older, slower devices have been offloaded onto Bluetooth, and your newer devices can blaze ahead on fast 802.11n!

If you have any other tips on handling multiple devices, and multiple generations of devices, for your family, let me know!

City man with MS awaits spot in N.Y. clinical trial

Andrew Dahlen first noticed something was wrong when he was no longer able to lift his guitar.

"I tried to play a G chord. At the time I had been playing guitar for 12 years and the G chord is one of the easiest chords to play and I couldn't even do that," Dahlen said, sitting in the backyard of his Saskatoon home.

At 22, Dahlen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. For the past six years, the disease has progressed, severely reducing mobility on his left side. He walks with a limp, has trouble performing everyday tasks and can no longer play his favourite instrument. But on Thursday he said his guitar - which he fondly named Chuggah - isn't going anywhere.

On Monday, Dahlen will travel to Albany, N.Y., for the final stage of eligibility screening for a clinical trial for chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). There he will learn if he will become Saskatchewan's first patient to participate in the clinical trial for the controversial multiple sclerosis treatment, also known as liberation therapy.

"It's about 30 per cent terrifying and 70 per cent exciting," said Dahlen, 28.

Saskatchewan's government is spending $2.2 million to help fund the Albany, N.Y.-based clinical trial in which 86 of the province's residents will take part.

The Albany trial is thought to be the largest double-blind study of its kind to date into the treatment. Half the patients will get the treatment and half won't. But Dahlen said regardless of whether he gets the treatment, he is happy to contribute to the research.

"Me having it might help out research for future generations. I know that there is lot more people who are going to get diagnosed," Dahlen said.

Dahlen will spend several days at the Albany Medical Centre, where a final assessment will determine whether he will be accepted.

Saskatchewan Health Minister Dustin Duncan called Dahlen's trip to New York a "groundbreaking day for our province and science" and thanked Dahlen for his willingness to take part in the study.

"Again, there still are some questions and that's why we want to be a part of trying to find answers to some of those questions, whether this is an effective treatment or not," said Duncan at a news conference Thursday.

CCSVI was first hypothesized by Dr. Paolo Zamboni. The Italian doctor has theorized that MS is the result of collapsed veins in the neck and upper chest, not a neurodegenerative disease as has been thought.

His treatment uses balloon angioplasty to open up the veins, in the same way coronary arteries narrowed by plaque are unblocked.

While clinicians in Canada do not perform the unproven procedure, many MS patients have travelled abroad for the treatment.

In June, a study commissioned by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador found patients who underwent the so-called liberation treatment experienced no measurable benefit from the procedure.

Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with an estimated 3,500 residents diagnosed with the disease, which impairs or destroys the functioning of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Duncan says he knows of the Newfoundland study, saying it was a followup with patients who travelled to various locations for liberation treatment.

"I think there are some differences, though. (The Albany trial) is being undertaken in one location under the care of one team of health care providers," Duncan said.

Dahlen, who had previously been fundraising on his own to travel to California for the treatment, is proud of any role he can take in contributing to the research process.

"Even if it only gives me back life for two years, those are two years I never had before. If it doesn't work, it never really hurts to try," he said.

Into the Navy: Marlborough teen transitions from school to military

Two months ago, Alexa Hamilton-Decker graduated from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. Now the 18-year-old is in Navy boot camp.

Hamilton-Decker left Monday for Great Lakes, Ill., where she expects a lot of running and physical exercise for the next eight weeks.

?I?m ready for it,? said Hamilton-Decker, who recently completed the Tough Mudder event in Vermont, a 10-12 mile obstacle course designed by British Special Forces.

After boot camp, it?s eight weeks at ?A? School, where she will learn about her trade. Hamilton-Decker, who studied automotive collision technology at Assabet, will start out as an E-2 seaman apprentice and work as a ship mechanic.

Hamilton-Decker will be in Illinois until December and then will ?hopefully go on a ship for the rest of my life,? she said.

But the future wasn?t always looking so bright.

Hamilton-Decker used to live in Palm Bay, Fla., until she and her mother Lisa Decker moved to Massachusetts 10 years ago. Decker said she followed a man to the Northeast, and although that relationship didn?t work out, the move changed her daughter?s life.

It wasn?t the right scene for them in Palm Bay ? there were a lot of teen moms and Decker wonders now if her daughter would have become like them. The two settled in Marlborough about four years ago.

With help from Assabet, ?it?s just been a lot better,? Decker said.

It was tough, as Hamilton-Decker had no family up here originally.

?She made her own family,? her mother said.

Ray Devoe, who got to know Lisa Decker from working at the Prospector on Lincoln Street, has become a member of that family.?

?I just tried to talk to her as a father,? Devoe said. ?She took to me like a dad.?

Devoe and his wife Ruth hosted a going-away party for Hamilton-Decker last Friday at their Marlborough home. About 40 people attended.

Devoe said he liked seeing Hamilton-Decker with all of her friends. But he was deeply saddened when he just missed a chance to say one last goodbye in person on Sunday before she went off with a Navy representative.

?It was tough,? Devoe said as his voice broke. ?I just wanted to say goodbye. She?s like the daughter I never had.?

Thankfully, the two did get to speak by phone before she left. Devoe has faith that she?ll do well in the Navy.

?I?m very, very proud of her,? Devoe said. ?She?s come a long way.?

Devoe thanked his wife for being supportive of his constant support of Hamilton-Decker.

Ruth Devoe is confident in her.

?I?m sad, but I?m happy and proud,? she said. ?She?s a strong girl.?

Hamilton-Decker follows her father, who lives out of state, and her grandfather into the Navy.

?I?m going to carry the torch,? Hamilton-Decker said. ?It?s something I?ve wanted all my life.?

Hamilton-Decker wants to go to the U.S. Naval Academy someday. She?s talked about joining the Navy since she was a young child, her mother said.

?She felt it was something she wanted to do to carry on the name,? Decker said. ?It?s really honorable what she?s doing.

?I know she can do this.?

Hamilton-Decker had been spending lots of time with friends and family before leaving. Her mom said she?s been busy cooking great breakfasts for her daughter and her friends and doing whatever she needed.

?It?s going to be tough,? Decker said. ?Part of my heart?s going out, but I think she?s doing the right thing.?

Who's hiring in July? Fewer jobs at Cisco, Apple

Click the slideshow for data on who was hiring in the Silicon Valley in July

Cisco Systems was still one of the Silicon Valley's top tech employers in July, but new job postings were down by nearly a third at the networking giant over a month before.

Cisco posted 1,077 jobs in the San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara metropolitan statistical area, the census tract that includes the heart of the Silicon Valley, according to numbers released by the Labor Market Information Division of the California Employment Development Department. That's a significant drop compared to June, when Cisco was looking to fill 1,469.

That only makes sense, coming as it does against an announced 1,300 job cut in mid July.

Other major Silicon Valley employers for July were Google, which took the top spot at 1,560 job postings, and Apple, which came in just behind Cisco with 1,070. That was actually a low number for Apple, which was No. 1 in June and has typically posted between 1,300 and 1,500 each month this year.

Click through the accompanying slideshow to see which employers had the most job postings, how the numbers of help wanted ads compares with the number of people without jobs and which skills are most in demand in the San Jose, San Francisco/San Mateo, Oakland/Fremont and Santa Cruz markets.

Who Is Using Video Marketing?
Posted by Eric Oakland on Fri, May 04, 2012

In answering this question, anyone and everyone who has a business wants theirs to have a greater online presence. Previously, it was only the large companies that could use videos as a way to market their business because they had the funds to do it. Yet it now possible for small businesses to have their own videos which they can then upload to various sites for nothing and so make people more aware of who they are.

So why should you be considering using video advertising? Below we take a look at some of the reasons for using this form of marketing in the future to help make your businesses online presence much stronger.

Reason 1 ? Videos enable you to create a multi-sensory experience for potential customers while including within it content they will find engaging. There is no other form of advertising you can use today that will trigger a greater emotional response in your potential target audience than video. So of course it results in you making a far greater impact from the outset on all your potential new customers.

Reason 2 ? Using video is the best and most effective way to get not only your brand but also your face and voice over the internet. This will in turn help you to gain a reputation for being an expert in your particular field. When people are able to see and hear you, it helps to make you more real and this helps to humanize their whole experience and makes them feel more comfortable.

Reason 3 ? Those who watch your videos will be able to get to know you better and of course this will help you to then gain their trust. Those that have trust and confidence in who you are will of course be more willing to do business with you. Also, if you are really sincere with regards to wanting to help or educate others, then your videos will convert very quickly in comparison to more conventional types of advertising. When it comes to videos you post online, they will continue to work for you 24/7. Providing you with opportunities to educate potential new customers even while sleeping.

Reason 4 ? Video is the future. In fact, Netflix alone accounts for 33% of all US Internet traffic from 8-10pm, up from 20% just 2 years ago. On top of that, video is becoming a larger and larger portion of total web traffic and that trend is only rising. Like Gretzky said, go where puck is going to be, and the puck is heading toward video.

3 Factors Why Friends Are Extra Essential Than Income (And Why You

Depression and panic are to the rise. People today get busier and busier. I listen to numerous effective experts who relatively ruefully say that they really don?t have very much time to see buddies and once they do everybody is so exhausted they battle to keep likely for an evening collectively. Most of the people seem to dread perform related social occasions as some type of ordeal to get acquired by way of, and lots of of us check out no less than several of the friends and family communicate with that we may well feel obliged to carry out as something of the chore.

However, we neglect these relationships at our peril to a excellent extent. Even the greater irritating facets indicate that we are engaging with many others. However the a lot more exciting and fulfilling parts of friendship (whoever that might be with) are frequently sacrificed at the stop of quite full functioning days and weeks and decades. Many of us know we need money ? poverty is undoubtedly poor for you personally in all respects. But again and again analysis reveals that further than an affordable typical of dwelling, dollars adds fairly little in your excellent of daily life. And, needless to say, it truly is coming much more durable to arrive by today! So ? over and above doing a dwelling, it?s possible our target ought to be on good friends in relation to our excellent of daily life relatively than cash. Here?s why:

  • Physical health ? our behavior have a tendency to be worse once we are on our own a lot of (what is excessive will differ from particular person to individual). We consume additional alcohol, just take significantly less exercise and generally try to eat much less nicely. I?m sure plenty of people that say they try to eat a significantly extra balanced meal when they are with other individuals than whenever they are in your own home alone. Sleep styles will also be disrupted by feeling lonely. Our immune methods don?t function in addition when we are on our private over we?d like or that?s very good for us possibly. These factors do relate to typically excellent relationships with other individuals ? you will discover plainly adverse effects of spending time with others in a very detrimental way (if they are bullying you for instance). But it surely isn?t going to really need to be considered a romantic romantic relationship, the benefits apply to good friends of all designs and sizes and ages and abilities plus a very few or lots of buddies (people change in their preference for that quantity of buddies they have, which is no dilemma in any way).
  • Perspective ? folks on their very own lots may be liable to a whole lot of rumination. Going repeatedly issues that probably failed to go properly, or are coming up, or could are already far better in certain way. Associates dispel that to some huge extent. You realise an individual else has the same matter, or even a distinctive check out on it, or just assist you to locate a humorous facet. They could (gently or otherwise) challenge your views which may be enormously helpful. They could be sympathetic for your outlook. Fantastic buddies tend to be sympathetic and complicated occasionally! They may have solutions which support. They might not. But in any occasion getting with good friends normally stops the rumination in its tracks for although a minimum of which happens to be a giant factor in lowering panic. Capital (over and above keeping a roof around your head and food about the table) not often decreases nervousness. It has a habit of engaging in the precise reverse.
  • Creativity ? close friends can assist you to bounce your ideas all-around, or can inspire you with new concepts. The spark designed involving buddies that have identical interests and enthusiasms has fluorescent led board suppliers to any quantity of companies getting create, scientific breakthroughs, artistic and imaginative jobs. The truth is, I might bet the story of any person you admire for his or her work or achievements can trace components of individuals back to conversations or activities with pals that arranged them off on a individual route or led writing board manufacturers to some great collaboration. This is certainly a great deal more enjoyable, fascinating, existence improving than counting your dollars ? regardless of whether it really is sharing a e book that you?ve equally read, donating cuttings off plants to one another, getting a chat over a cup of tea or coming up with an notion that will adjust the planet.

Friendships do not just happen by themselves

?We deal with socialising as if it is a frivolous diversion on the tasks at hand fairly than an exercise that is certainly vital to our well-being as individuals and like a group.?

Jacqueline Olds and Richard Schwartz, Harvard Professional medical School

It is easy within our tradition to believe that friendship really should be a little something you do not really have to perform at, you need to just be likable sufficient while you are to appeal to good friends as being a sort of increase on. This can be partly why it truly is so hugely annoying plus a major shameful taboo for many of us to sense as though you?ve no good friends. And that feeling just about always leads to a vicious circle of withdrawing since you think friendless ? which naturally causes it to be self satisfying. This is what the American psychiatrists quoted over uncover in many of their sufferers ? instead than being truly depressed, often these individuals are lonely and have reacted within a way that has produced them even lonelier. The tv we enjoy and messages we receive from all angles may make us think that everybody else has terrific sets of associates in addition to a excellent social living whereas the reality for many people is far from that glossy picture. The shame of that may be a tough 1 to beat and folks will typically cover away rather than go out into the globe to discover good friends.

It can take work. It definitely does. I am aware a lot of people seem to envy me due to the fact I do possess a good deal of good friends. I want them and love currently being with them. I am at times irritated by them. But the fact is the fact that I initiate more social activities than I?m invited to. At times which makes me really feel a little down or used for granted or irritated. Having said that, after i stand back from this, I do know which the explanations others don?t organise items to invite other individuals as well are various. The problem, the probable mess, the actual fact that they sense far too busy or way too drained, it is effortless to place off, there is certainly usually a little something else to carry out, they don?t like considering forward, they really feel shy that folks won?t take their invitations, they come to feel place upon, they do not want a late night time, and on it goes. I have professional all of individuals things and more apart from. But I?m old sufficient now to grasp that I obtain a lot from engaging in a complete variety of points, some with others (and diverse persons for various events/activities) and a few I delight in on my own. And that other people appear to enjoy the things that I organise as well. I do get invited to items but I no extended have a perception of needing to match invitations received and offered as if someone was retaining a tally (I don?t think obliged to return invations either, this was a liberating realisation a person day).

I have realized being artistic about the social contact I do invite people today to ? being a single parent for a while it absolutely was challenging to get out of the house and I could not find the money for to try and do a lot ? but held loads of girls? nights in possibly with a single buddy or even a group, or did things through the day with other dad and mom. A deliver your own cocktail night labored a handle (I set up a blackboard for everyone to compose their contribution on to some ?menu?, provided crisps and everyone designed cocktails for everyone else to purchase, while using substances they?d brought). Grumpy aged adult females evenings for your range of feminine pals (all of whom willingly flip up that has a plate of food to share) is normally entertaining. This earlier weekend a group of us went for afternoon tea as well as a meeting with the author Barbara Trapido as component with the Lowdham Book Festival locally. I know in my heart of hearts this most likely wouldn?t have occurred if I didn?t organise it. It induces a slight feeling of worry that I am forcing my recommendations on other individuals that are reluctant, as well as a slight perception of irritation that I am producing the largest work. But these emotions dissipate quite swiftly and therefore are over outweighed with the pretty satisfying and fascinating afternoon that most of us had.

Start small. You can find many items out there to do. Quite a few of them no cost. Invite one particular human being and propose they convey a pal. Really don?t expect it to become an episode of Friends (the enduring recognition of this indicate tells us a little something I believe ? it all looks so thoroughly easy and pleasurable and humorous). Reconnect with older close friends. Retain making an attempt. It is worthwhile.

Sylvester Stallone opens up about son's death

Legendary Hollywood tough guy Sylvester Stallone has been traveling with co-stars to promote a new action movie, but beneath all the hype and glamour, he's a father still grieving the death of his son, Sage.

Sage Stallone, 36, died last month at his Los Angeles home. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

"It's tough. It's very tough ? it's a horrible situation," Stallone, 66, told ABC News' Cecilia Vega.

After his son's death, Stallone cancelled all promotional appearances for the movie. His interview with "Good Morning America" was his first since then.

Support from good friends and family has helped him deal with the loss.

"Time, hopefully, will heal, and you try to get through it, but it's just something. It's a reality of life," he said. "I think it's important to get back and start reliving your life. Otherwise, you can go into a spiral."

So Stallone is back at work, surrounded by co-stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren, to promote their movie, "The Expendables 2," which opens Friday.

They spoke to ABC News before the film's London premiere.

Photos: Sage Stallone Through the Years

The film - which also features stars Chuck Norris, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Liam Hemsworth - is a sequel to the 2010 hit. Its shoot-'em-up, knock-'em-out, high-flying plot focuses on a group of mercenaries who seek revenge for the murder of a friend.

Van Damme admits to being in awe of his castmates.

"I saw Mr. Stallone and Mr. Schwarzenegger when I was a kid in Belgium. They were like role models. They gave me inspiration to be what I am today," he said.

The cast of famous action heroes jumped at the chance to star in the sequel to "The Expendables," which brought in nearly $300 million at the box office.

Stallone, who co-wrote the film, said when he called the rest of the stars to invite them to participate, they were all enthusiastic.

Lundgren didn't need to be persuaded much, and Schwarzenegger was happy to be back in the limelight for his acting.

He had most recently made headlines for having fathered a child with his housekeeper while he was married to Maria Shriver.

"It was great to be back because the spotlight was not on me," Schwarzenegger said. "I was very appreciative that Sly was interested in having me in the movie."

They joked about helping Schwarzenegger get back into the swing of things.

"They thought that being eight years out of the game, that I maybe would not know how to hold a gun anymore," Schwarzenegger said. "Stallone was coming over, saying, 'Here's how you hold it.'"

"He was aiming at himself," Stallone said.

The cast primarily comprises vintage action heroes, but there's no retirement on the horizon for them. Van Damme is 51, Willis is 54, Lundgren is 57, Schwarzenegger is 65, Stallone is 66, and Norris is 72. At 44, Statham is the baby action hero of the bunch.

They might tease him about it, and might have laughed and joked on set, but they mean business.

Asked whether there will be a third "Expendables" film, Stallone said, "It's so rare to get the old team together. It's like having a great team and when that combo works, it's so rare and you just don't want to let it go."

Nearly 1,000 earthquakes recorded in Arizona over three years

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Earthquakes are among the most destructive and common of geologic phenomena. Several million earthquakes are estimated to occur worldwide each year (the vast majority are too small to feel, but their motions can be measured by arrays of seismometers). Historically, most of Arizona has experienced low levels of recorded seismicity, with infrequent moderate and large earthquakes in the state. Comprehensive analyses of seismicity within Arizona have not been previously possible due to a lack of seismic stations in most regions, contributing to the perception that widespread earthquakes in Arizona are rare. Debunking that myth, a new study published by Arizona State University researchers found nearly 1,000 earthquakes rattling the state over a three-year period.

Jeffrey Lockridge, a graduate student in ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration and the project's lead researcher, used new seismic data collected as part of the EarthScope project to develop methods to detect and locate small-magnitude earthquakes across the entire state of Arizona. EarthScope's USArray Transportable Array was deployed within Arizona from April 2006 to March 2009 and provided the first opportunity to examine seismicity on a statewide scale. Its increased sensitivity allowed Lockridge to find almost 1,000 earthquakes during the three-year period, including many in regions of Arizona that were previously thought to be seismically inactive.

"It is significant that we found events in areas where none had been detected before, but not necessarily surprising given the fact that many parts of the state had never been sampled by seismometers prior to the deployment of the EarthScope USArray," says Lockridge. "I expected to find some earthquakes outside of north-central Arizona, where the most and largest events had previously been recorded, just not quite so many in other areas of the state."

One-thousand earthquakes over three years may sound alarmingly high, but the large number of earthquakes detected in the study is a direct result of the improved volume and quality of seismic data provided by EarthScope. Ninety-one percent of the earthquakes Lockridge detected in Arizona were "microquakes" with a magnitude of 2.0 or smaller, which are not usually felt by humans. Detecting small-magnitude earthquakes is not only important because some regions experiencing small earthquakes may produce larger earthquakes, but also because geologists use small magnitude earthquakes to map otherwise hidden faults beneath the surface.

Historically, the largest earthquakes and the majority of seismicity recorded within Arizona have been located in an area of north-central Arizona. More recently, a pair of magnitude 4.9 and 5.3 earthquakes occurred in the Cataract Creek area outside of Flagstaff. Earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or larger also have occurred in other areas of the state, including a magnitude 4.2 earthquake in December 2003 in eastern Arizona and a magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Chino Valley in 1976.

"The wealth of data provided by the EarthScope project is an unprecedented opportunity to detect and locate small-magnitude earthquakes in regions where seismic monitoring (i.e. seismic stations) has historically been sparse," explains Lockridge. "Our study is the first to use EarthScope data to build a regional catalog that detects all earthquakes magnitude 1.2 or larger."

His results appear in a paper titled, "Seismicity within Arizona during the Deployment of the EarthScope USArray Transportable Array," published in the August 2012 issue of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. Ramon Arrowsmith and Matt Fouch, professors in ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration, are Lockridge's dissertation advisors and coauthors on the paper. Fouch is also a geophysicist at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism in Washington, DC.

"The most surprising result was the degree to which the EarthScope data were able to improve upon existing catalogs generated by regional and national networks. From April 2007 through November 2008, other networks detected only 80 earthquakes within the state, yet over that same time we found 884 earthquakes, or 11 times as many, which is really quite staggering," says Lockridge. "It's one of countless examples of how powerful the EarthScope project is and how much it is improving our ability to study Earth."

Lockridge is also lead author on a study that focuses on a cluster of earthquakes located east of Phoenix, near Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The results from this study will be published in Seismological Research Letters later this year. In his current studies as doctoral student, Lockridge is using the same methods used for Arizona to develop a comprehensive earthquake catalog for the Great Basin region in Nevada and western Utah.

Romney, Obama Trade Jabs Over Energy Policy and Alternative Fuels

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney took aim at each other over the subject of energy during their respective campaign stops on Tuesday. Romney criticized Obama's position on coal and fossil fuels during a stop at an Ohio coal mine, while Obama jabbed at his opponent's position on wind power during an appearance in Iowa, according to reports by The Hill and other media outlets.

Here is some of the key information regarding the battle between the two campaigns over energy policy this week.

* Romney, during his appearance at a coal mine in Beallsville, Ohio, said that Obama "is for all the sources of energy that come from above the ground, none of the sources that come from below the ground," as quoted by The Hill.

* He also sharply criticized the air pollution rules that have been put into place by the Obama administration, which he and other Republicans say will hurt the nation's coal industry. Romney has pledged to support both the American coal and oil industries.

* Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) also weighed in on energy policy during his own campaign stop in Colorado on Tuesday, telling a crowd of supporters at Lakewood High School that Obama "has done all that he can to make it harder for us to use our own energy," as quoted by the Washington Post.

* According to Bloomberg News, Obama, for his part, levied sharp criticism on Tuesday at both Romney and Ryan for their stance on wind power, saying that the energy source is not "a fad" as he said that Ryan has claimed, nor is the promise of alternative fuels "imaginary" as he said Romney believes.

* Obama praised the fact that Iowa now gets almost 20 percent of its electricity from wind, and said that his two opponents are uninformed regarding alternative fuels and their uses. He told the crowd in Oskaloosa that if "Gov. Romney knew what you were doing," he would be more supportive of wind energy production, as quoted by Politico.

* He also touted his support for an extension of a wind energy manufacturing tax credit that is due to expire at the end of the year, as also reported by Politico.

Somali government 'must end assassinations'

Somalia's government must end a wave of assassinations that has struck the volatile capital Mogadishu as leaders jostle for power ahead of elections next week, the AU and UN warned Monday.

After eight years of infighting, the corruption-riddled government, which is propped up by almost 17,000 African Union troops defending it from Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents, is due to be replaced on August 20 via United Nations-backed elections.

Unknown gunmen have killed at least seven people including businessmen and journalists in the past week alone, said AU special representative to Somalia Boubacar Diarra.

So far this year, at least one Somali journalist has been targeted and killed each month.

"There had been a steady rise in assassinations targeting journalists, government officials and businessmen," Diarra said in a statement.

"The Somali authorities must institute investigations into these killings with a view to bringing the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice."

Yusuf Ali Osma, a veteran journalist and senior official at the information ministry, journalist Mohamed Ali Keyr, and businessman Mohamed Rage were all murdered over the weekend, Diarra said.

Reporters Without Borders condemned the killings of Osma and 23-year-old Keyr, a reporter for the Horyaal news website, which brought the toll of journalists killed this year to eight.

"At this rate, 2012 could become the deadliest year of the past decade for media personnel in Somalia," the press rights watchdog said.

UN Special Representative for Somalia Augustine Mahiga demanded an end to the "culture of impunity", sending his condolences to Somali reporters who "for too long have seen their colleagues targeted, injured and assassinated without a single perpetrator being brought to justice."

No one has claimed responsibility for the killings in Mogadishu, which has been rocked by a string of explosions since Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents abandoned their fixed positions last year and switched to guerrilla attacks.

The hardline Shebab have vowed to topple the weak Western-backed government, and have launched several grenade and suicide bomber attacks.

However, recent killings are also likely linked to power struggles as the end of the transition period approaches.

The UN, AU and East Africa's main diplomatic body IGAD warned in a joint statement Friday that they were "increasingly concerned" that leaders were using "bribery, intimidation (and) violence" to rig the selection of lawmakers to parliament.

Bowed down by repeated droughts and riven by over two decades of conflict, Somalia is torn between rival clans, Islamist insurgents and the government.

It has been without a stable central government since the overthrow of former president Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
