Interior Ministry signs up for Facebook, Twitter

The Interior Ministry of Ukraine created three accounts on Facebook and Twitter each, UKRINFORM learned from the Interior Ministry's Public Relations Office.

"The Interior Ministry has created on the social media Facebook and microblogging service Twitter three accounts each, in Ukrainian, Russian and English languages, providing online news about the activities of the ministry," reads the statement of the ministry.

The agency also noted that such channels to inform the Ukrainian and foreign citizens on the activities of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry appeared at the request of Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko. "This is one of the ways for closer communication of the public authority with society," the ministry's press office said.

Porsche Design BlackBerry P'9981 on sale now, but only at Harrods (Digital Trends)

BlackBerry P9981 Porsche DesignHow fitting that RIM and Porsche Design has chosen one of the world?s most famous luxury department stores, Harrods in London, as the exclusive seller of its luxury BlackBerry P?9981 phone.

Announced at the tail end of October but with no firm release date attached, the flashy device has now gone on sale there, where it?s priced at a mere ?1,275, or a touch under $2,000.

That?s SIM-free of course, but admittedly the price would probably only be considered ?mere? by regular Harrods patrons, as it?s considerably more than the standard Bold 9900 on which it?s based.

Like its cheaper cousin, the P?9981 has a 1.2Ghz processor, 768MB RAM, a 2.8-inch 640 x 480 resolution touchscreen and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. It?s separated by that eye-catching design, the brushed metal fascia and the hand-wrapped, all-leather rear panel.

BlackBerry OS 7 has been treated to a Porsche Design makeover too, as it uses a custom UI and has the popular augmented reality app, Wikitude World Browser, pre-installed.

Available with either English or Arabic as the standard language, anyone keen to get their hands on this genuinely exclusive BlackBerry will have to make the journey to Harrods ? or at least their flunky will anyway ? as it?s only available in-store and not online. However, we?re willing to bet they would send one out with your weekly order of Dom Perignon if you asked nicely.

Phonearena.com spoke to a Harrods representative, who described the P?9981 as ?in very high demand and selling fast.?

Rumor: Two iPads to be unveiled in January (Digital Trends)

Apple rumors are a dime a dozen, but here?s the latest. DigiTimes, a site known for many true and false rumors, reports that Apple will unveil two new versions of the iPad at iWorld/Macworld on Jan. 26, 2012. The new models will both have 9.7-inch screens like the current iPad, but at least one of them will have a QXGA screen (1536?2048 pixel resolution). A previous DigiTimes rumor, pointed toward a model with a 7.85-inch screen, but DigiTimes now says that is not the case. One model may have an 8MP rear camera while the other may have a 5MP camera. Oh, and at least one of the units will have a larger 14,000mAh battery (bigger than any tablet we can recall off hand).?

It does seem odd that Apple would release two iPad models that are the same except for some minor camera, screen, and battery improvements, but stranger things have happened. Odder is the timing of the unveiling. The first iPad was unveiled in April 2010, and the second was shown in March 2011, so a January reveal could be feasible, but Apple has not participated in Macworld for three years now, instead opting to hold its own events.

The presence of a high resolution screen on the next iPad has been floating around since the iPad 2 launched. It was originally rumored that the device would be unveiled around Sept. 2011. Another recent rumor pins the release date for the tablet Feb. 24, 2012, the birthday of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.?

Texas men trade same Christmas card for decades

WHITEHOUSE, Texas (AP) -- A Christmas card that crisscrossed the country as part of an old joke between two Texas men will rest this holiday for the first time in 61 years.

Acker Hanks mailed the card to his former neighbor Lee Kelley in 1950. Kelley, a prankster, mailed it back a year later.

The two continued sending the card back and forth, and when Kelley died, his widow mailed the tattered message for over a decade. Last year, it returned to Hanks unread. He believes Kelley's widow moved to a nursing home.

A list of dates and places in the worn card documents its journey. Hanks plans to frame it.

"I always looked forward to getting the card," he told the Tyler Morning Telegraph (http://bit.ly/vbaPyB ). "I don't think it'll ever leave me now."

"I was on the third-floor railing and saw a massive group of people" on the first floor, said Makenzie Shofner, 15, of Maple Plain, Minn. "It looked like they were trying to pull people's stuff out of their bags."

"A lot of parents (were)?on their cell phones trying to find their kids," added Jennifer Reiland of Burnsville, Minn. "This was a harrowing experience for myself, my mother and my 5-year-old daughter."

Dan Jasper, a mall spokesman, said no significant injuries were reported but called the incident "disturbing."

"As a preventive measure we will ramp up security even more this week to make sure it doesn't happen again," Jasper said.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active

Sony Ericsson have been releasing quite a bit of smartphones in the past few weeks and considering they have decided to focus only on smartphones from now on, it makes sense to fill the market with a phone or two for every category and niche. The Xperia Active reminds me of a bar of soap with a handle. As much as I tried to describe how it looks, I kept going back to that. This is not to say that it?s not elegant or looks ugly but it certainly isn?t your typical smartphone. I guess that?s a given considering not only the fact that it?s water resistant but that its name suggests it?s meant for much more. The Xperia Active takes a lot of its looks from the Xperia Mini, and it?s a good design for the purpose it serves.

The 3-inch screen is surrounded by a metallic band with the words ?Xperia? inscribed at the bottom near the lanyard holder. At first I wondered if the holder could also serve as a bottle opener, the phone sure looks sturdy enough to open a few bottles in an emergency. The phone?s physical buttons are orange in color which adds to the sporty theme Sony Ericsson tried to get going here. I had an issue with the power/unlock button that?s on the left side of the phone. Unlike the volume and camera buttons on the other side, the power button doesn?t protrude as much and I found it hard to use. It wasn?t like there were times when I couldn?t press the button but after about a week of using the phone I still don?t like the power button. At the back of the phone you have the loudspeaker next to the camera lens and above that is the flash and the secondary mic. The USB and 3.5mm audio connector are at the bottom near the lanyard holder. They?re covered to ensure the phone is completely water resistant should it come into contact with water. In fact if you disconnect the earphones and check the screen it often reminds you to recover the connector to keep the phone water resistant.

On the front there is no secondary camera for video calls which seems a little odd considering this phone pretty much has everything else squeezed into it. It comes with a proximity sensor next to the speaker as well as a small led for notifications. At the bottom of the screen you get capacitive buttons for Back, Home and Menu and a mic. The build quality is excellent as you should expect from a phone that can survive a drop in water and it certainly looks like it can survive a drop on the floor as well within a reasonable height. To access the sim card, battery and microSD slot you have to remove two covers. The second cover is under the first and acts as an insulator to protect the internals from the elements.

Included in the box is a microUSB cable, charger, earphones with mic and call/end button, ear hooks, manuals, wrist strap and an armband. A microSD card might also be in the retail package but my review phone did not come with one nor did it come with the ear hooks, wrist strap or the armband. The Xperia Active has a 3 inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 which is pretty impressive for its size. Thanks to the Reality display and the Bravia mobile engine, pictures are crisp and clear on the screen. Despite its size this phone is no slouch, it?s running on a 1 GHz Scorpion CPU with the Adreno 205 for graphics. It also has 512MB of RAM and 1GB built-in storage but only about 320MB will be usable. The 5 megapixel camera has autofocus and image stabilization and can take videos at 720p. GPS, WiFi and DLNA are also included so this phone by no means is a ?budget? Android phone, Sony Ericsson have included virtually all the bells and whistles on this one. When I installed the PC software for it I was prompted to update my phone so I ended up running Gingerbread 2.3.4 which while not the latest comes with several improvements such as a 3D panoramic camera options and swipe with T9. ?Using SunSpider I was able to get 3424.8ms which is on par with the Xperia Pro that had similar internals but trails behind the Arc S and its upgraded CPU?s score of 2607ms.

HBT: Rays interested in Posada?

We already know Jorge Posada isn?t returning to the Yankees, but he hasn?t dismissed the possibility of continuing his career elsewhere.

With that in mind, Javier Maymi of ESPNDeportes.com hears (link in Spanish) that the division-rival Rays are interested in the 40-year-old. Maymi confirmed the information with Posada?s father, who said he has also had some discussions with the Orioles and Phillies. However, he hasn?t decided whether he will play in 2012.

The Rays are looking at Posada as a possibility for first base, designated hitter and backup catcher. Jose Lobaton or Robinson Chirinos figure to be the primary backup for the newly-signed Jose Molina, so Posada would likely only be an emergency option behind the plate.

Posada batted .235/.315/.398 with 14 home runs, 44 RBI and a .714 OPS over 387 plate appearances this past season. He did have an .814 OPS (and all of his homers) against right-handed pitching, so he could still have some value if used appropriately.

Berkeley Explains Exactly Why It Chose Google Over Microsoft (GOOG, MSFT)

The University of California at Berkeley just decided to move off its old email system. It chose Gmail over Microsoft's Office 365.

Usually, the decision-making process that goes into such a choice is shrouded in secrecy. But Berkeley decided to be transparent, and published a matrix explaining the pros and cons of both solutions.

In basic terms, Cal decided it could get Google Apps up and running faster and for less money.

Particularly interesting: to move to Office 365, the university would have had to do a double migration -- first to an on-premise version of Exchange, then to the online version in Office 365. This pokes a hole in Microsoft's claim that Office 365 is a true cloud-based competitor to Office 365. (This double migration wouldn't be required in all cases, but it's NEVER required with Google Apps.)

Here's where Google had the biggest advantages.

  • Cheaper support during the migration. Because other universities in the UC system have already migrated to Google Apps, Cal can rely on them to provide some support. With Microsoft, it would have to turn to Microsoft Consulting Services "at a significant cost to the project."
  • Faster to set up. Deploying Gmail will take six to ten weeks, and the university will be able to keep some recent changes it made to its email routing system. With Office 365, the university has to move from its current system to an on-premises version of Exchange first. Then, it can move from Exchange to Office 365. It will also have to throw out most of the routing infrastructure it just installed.
  • Works with existing software. Gmail integrates with other Google products that some university departments use, and with the document storage and management system from Box, which the university already bought. Office 365 can work with SharePoint and Lync (which it mistakenly calls Lynx), but it was not interested in those solutions and didn't even consider them.
  • Easier to develop on. More people on campus know how to work with Google's APIs than with Microsoft's Exchange.?
  • Migration of email groups. Google has a product that could be used to migrate Cal's existing Mailman mailing lists to Gmail. Microsoft recommended against even trying to migrate Mailman to Exchange.

The solutions were pretty close in other areas, like delegated administration (neither was great, but Google was slightly better), user familiarity (it depends on what product people are using today), and mobile support.

Microsoft won for authentication and the ability to integrate with on-premise systems.

No two customers will have the same needs, but this is a good exercise to show how these decisions are made -- and why Gmail increasingly has an advantage among highly cost-conscious organizations like educational institutions and governments.

Latest Syria killings draw international ire

Syrian troops have killed 111 people in one of the deadliest incidents since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March, activists said Wednesday.

    1. Tax fraud claimed in Huguette Clark estate
    2. 8 US soldiers charged with death of fellow GI

    7. Oops. Housing crash deeper than we thought

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the killings occurred in the town of Kfar Owaid in the northwestern province of Idlib Tuesday.

"It was an organized massacre. The troops surrounded people, then killed them," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the organization.

The killings were reported a day before Arab League observers were due to visit Syria to monitor pledges by Assad's government to withdraw troops from besieged areas.

The White House said it was "deeply disturbed" by Tuesday's attack, the State Department stepped up its travel warning, France called the deaths a "murderous spiral," and the Arab League reminded the Assad regime of its responsibilities to protect its civilians.

In a statement, the rights organization said government forces surrounded about 150 local residents and shot them with bullets and tank shells for more than five hours.

"Some women tried to break the siege but in vain," it said. "The security forces arrested a number of young people from their homes, shackled them [and] executed them," it added.

It said 111 bodies were counted in the local mosque, of which 56 had been identified by its local activists.

Dr. Mousab Azzawi, a coordinator in London for the organization, told msnbc.com that the total number of victims its local activists had verified since Monday was 228.

"The situation is absolutely getting worse by the day," he said. "This area has been crippled by protest strikes and there is no electrical power, freezing cold weather and very little communication."

The accounts could not be independently confirmed because Syria has banned entry to most foreign journalists and places heavy restrictions on the work of local reporters.

Azzawi claimed Syria's decision on Monday to allow Arab League monitors to enter the country had simply prolonged the bloodshed.

"Every time they talk it means another day without change for the people in Syria," he said.

Warnings from US
The Obama administration reacted to the latest reports by renewing its call for Assad to step down, saying he "does not deserve to rule Syria."

"The United States is deeply disturbed by credible reports that the Assad regime continues to indiscriminately kill scores of civilians and army defectors, while destroying homes and shops and arresting protesters without due process," the White House said in a statement read by spokesman Jay Carney, warning that the international community could take more steps against Syria.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland added that the stepped-up violence signaled that Syria's acceptance of the Arab League plan is merely a "stalling tactic."

"This is not the behavior of a government that is getting ready to implement the Arab League proposals," she told reporters, adding later that: "We've got lots of promises as the government continues to mow down its own people."

The department, renewing its travel warning for Syria, repeated earlier alerts that urged Americans to leave while there is still commercial air service and limit their travel inside the country due to the violence. The warning also said that already limited services at the embassy in Damascus likely would be curtailed "as staff levels ... are being further reduced."

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said "everything must be done to stop this murderous spiral into which Bashar Assad is leading his people more every day." He added that the U.N. Security Council must "pass a firm resolution demanding the end to this repression."

The German government's human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, called for an immediate end to violence against deserters and demonstrators.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said "it is unacceptable" that so many people were killed after Syria agreed to an Arab League plan to halt the bloodshed.

In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby expressed deep concern about reports of an escalation in violence and appealed to Damascus to shoulder its responsibilities to protect civilians in compliance with its pledges to abide by the league's plan.

The Arab League plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, open talks with the opposition, withdraw military forces from city streets and allow in human rights workers and journalists. The 22-member Arab League has also suspended Syria's membership and leveled economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Despite the new violence, the Arab League appeared to be going ahead with its plans to send in its first delegation of monitors on Thursday. An Arab League official said the second team of observers ? 30 experts in military affairs and human rights ? will head for Syria on Sunday, led by Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa of Sudan.

Another team of 100 observers will leave for Syria within two weeks, he said.

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, described this weeks killings as "brutal massacres and genocide," saying it has urged the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Syria. The SNC also asked the international community to help protect Syrian citizens.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Aol Shareholders Freak Out Over Exec Departures ? As They Should

aolcareers1An inordinate amount of business deals with telling stories about the future. The reason Yahoo's market cap is down to $19.83 billion from a high of $55 billion is because shareholders don't believe that it has a future. The reason Aol bought Bebo for $850 million (a little over half of Aol's current market cap!) is that at the time it essentially believed -- after processing analysis and reports, of course -- that it was worth that much ?

Polemical journalist and atheist Christopher Hitchens dead at 62 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.

"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.

A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.

The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.

Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."

The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.

"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.

In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."

The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.

"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Obama, pushing back at Republicans, vows support for Israel (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama assured Jewish voters on Friday he remains committed to Israel's security and a two-state solution with the Palestinians as he defended himself against attacks on his policy from Republican presidential challengers.

Obama, who has been criticized by Republicans and some in the American Jewish community for being too tough on a close ally, insisted his administration has done more than any other to protect Israel and called his commitment "unshakeable."

"So don't let anybody else tell a different story," Obama told a cheering crowd at a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism, a politically liberal group. "Those are the facts."

Obama did not name names but left little doubt he was responding to Republican candidates who have recently tried to outdo each other in criticizing his policy toward Israel as they seek to cut into his support among Jewish voters.

Mitt Romney said recently Obama has "repeatedly thrown Israel under the bus," and Newt Gingrich thrust himself into controversy last week by declaring that the Palestinians are an "invented" people who want to destroy Israel.

Obama, in a pointed reference to his Republican opponents, said the bonds between Israel and the United States "transcend partisan politics -- or at least they should."

The White House wants to shore up support among Jewish voters for Obama's 2012 re-election bid. He won nearly eight of every 10 Jewish voters in 2008, but a slip would jeopardize his re-election drive in battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania, where Jews are an important swing bloc.

Obama faced criticism from some Jewish leaders earlier this year when he insisted any negotiations on borders of a future Palestinian state begin on the basis of lines that existed before Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967.

He has also had a strained relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and his Middle East peace efforts have mostly stalled.

But Obama won praise from Israel and its backers for his opposition to a Palestinian push beginning in September to win U.N. statehood recognition, and he has also been credited for taking a tough line with Iran, Israel's arch enemy.

"We're going to keep standing with our Israeli friends and allies," Obama said. He called Iran's nuclear program a threat not only to Israel but to the world and reiterated Washington "will take no options off the table" in the standoff.

Obama also reaffirmed U.S. support for the eventual creation of "an independent Palestine alongside a secure Jewish state of Israel" and pledged not to waver from that goal.

French court convicts Chirac of corruption

(AP) ? A French court found former President Jacques Chirac guilty of embezzling public funds to illegally finance the conservative party he long led, in a historic verdict Thursday with repercussions for his legacy and France's political elite.

Chirac, a savvy world diplomat and icon of France's ruling establishment for decades, will not go behind bars but was handed a two-year suspended sentence that goes on his criminal record. Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced at the conviction.

He's the first former French head of state to face prosecution since the World War II era. But the 79-year-old former leader did not take part in the trial, after doctors determined that he suffers severe memory lapses.

The court said Thursday it had found Chirac guilty in two related cases involving fake jobs created at the RPR party, which he led during his 1977-1995 tenure as Paris mayor. He was convicted of embezzling public funds, abuse of trust, and illegal conflict of interest.

Chirac repeatedly denied wrongdoing. It took years to get him to trial because he enjoyed immunity from prosecution during his 1995-2007 presidential tenure, during which he led France into the shared euro currency and became the global champion of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The court said it took into account his age, health and status as a former head of state when determining the light sentence.

Unusually, the prosecutor had requested that Chirac and the nine other defendants in the complex two-part case be acquitted, saying not enough evidence proved intentional corruption. The court disagreed, saying his guilt results "from long-standing and reiterated practices" of illegal party financing.

Chirac's adopted daughter fought back tears as she lamented the ruling.

"The justice system has been very severe, but this is a fair and independent justice system. For the family, it's a great pain we have to accept," said Chirac's adopted daughter Anh Dao Traxel, her voice cracking with emotion as she spoke to reporters outside the courtroom.

"I think this decision is too, too severe for him and our family has more than ever to show solidarity and be supportive, for his health for the rest of his life," said Traxel, a former Vietnamese boat person. Chirac and his wife formally adopted Traxel after she came to Paris in 1979.

Chirac spokeswoman Benedicte Brissart declined to comment immediately, saying time was needed to go over the decision.

Chirac lawyer Georges Kiejman called the ruling disappointing and said he expected a decision later Thursday on whether Chirac would appeal.

"We have to take a step back and read this ruling, we have to speak of course with the main person involved (Chirac), and we will know tonight if he accepts this decision," Kiejman said. "What I hope is that this ruling doesn't change in any way the deep affection the French feel legitimately for Jacques Chirac."

The ruling is certain to bruise Chirac's public image. Leaving office in 2007 did wonders for his popularity: while polls showed that he was unpopular in his final years as president, those numbers soared afterward ? and even today, the avuncular former leader, who now focuses on charitable work, has been one of France's most popular public figures.

Critics had pushed for years to see Chirac answer charges of illegal party financing, frustrated by his presidential immunity and a sense that the political machine would never let the sensitive trial come to pass.

Jerome Karsenti, a lawyer for the anti-corruption group Anticor, which had argued against Chirac as a civil party to the case, said the reverberations could be widespread for France's political elites.

"This is a strong message from the court ? a message to all politicians of responsibility. It's also proof of a mature and transparent democracy that is today able to make a distinction and try a former president," Karsenti said.

"I see it as a historic and very important decision for the future of French democracy," he said.

The latest baring of France's underworld of back-room cronyism, corruption and political wrongdoing could loom large in voters minds as the French cast ballots in presidential and legislative elections next year.

The party that succeeded the RPR, President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, and the opposition Socialist Party have seen their share of scandal recently. Two longtime Sarkozy allies have been targeted since September in a case of suspected kickbacks in a 1990s French defense deal with Pakistan. Sarkozy served as budget minister at the time, but his office and allies insist he was not involved.

In Thursday's ruling, the court found that 19 totally or partially fake jobs were created to benefit Chirac. "The case and the debates established that Jacques Chirac was the initiator and principal author of crimes of abuse of trust, embezzling and illegal conflict of interest," the ruling said.

A career politician, Chirac was a debonair master of the workings of public office. He modeled himself after longtime French leader Charles de Gaulle and was nicknamed "Le Bulldozer" early in his career for his determination and ambition.

France's last leader with memories of World War II, Chirac was the first to acknowledge the nation's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during the Holocaust. But he struggled to achieve reforms to the regulated economy and failed to defuse tensions between police and minority youth that exploded into riots in 2005.

[OOC] Monsters

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?Gods; A New Age.?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Monsters:

While the technology of the world has taken a steep dive, and much of the former knowledge lost, it doesn?t mean that the horrors of every child?s fantasies remain as stories and fairy tales.
This Thread classifies the various monsters by their nature and size.

Humanoid:
Humanoid monsters stand on two feet, and they are roughly the height of an average human. They are able to think for themselves (somewhat at least); this category varies from elves to orcs to fey and many others.

Large:
Large monsters varies in shapes. From the large Oozes, werebears, ogres and so on. Such monsters stand at least eight feet (243.8 cm) tall, and the vast majority of such creatures are carnivores.
Large monsters aren?t particularly clever, many has significantly small brains which sets their temper and understanding back severely. It is hard to train larger monsters as they rely more on their instincts, making them an unstable weapon/ally.

Colossal:
Colossal monsters are by far the rarest. Full grown dragons, titans even mountain giants are considered to be a part of this category, and unlike the large monsters, colossal monsters do have the brains and independence to know what they?re doing.

To see these beings outside their domain is beyond rare. Having them as an ally for another nation/kingdom is maybe seen once every fifth generation.

Undead:
Necromancers have the ability to bring back spirits and trap them within a body. These animated corpses has no will other than that of their master; their body may decompose as normal but until the spirit is released from its prison, it will find no rest.

Ghouls, wights, liches, ghosts, etc. are all a part of this category, however they vary in strength and immunity; some are easily banished while others require much more preparations.
Ghouls, skeletons and zombies are by far the weakest. A simple hit to their head with a weapon, or a stab to their heart, will destroy them.
Wights, ghosts, and vampires will require more holy measures.
Liches and Vampire Lords are by far the hardest to destroy. Not only will holy measures be needed, but also precautions to ensure that they never return after they?re ?killed?.

Out-Worlders:
Demons and angels. Creatures that are not from the world originally are considered to be Out-worlders and depending on their intentions, they will be marked as demons or angels. They can come in all forms of sizes.

Magical:
Magical monsters come in of creation through arcane or divine powers. A most common example is the Djinnies, Efreets and golems who are (in nature) magical. Only powerful wizards are capable of making/calling forth such creatures and even then it can be a fickle job as a simple mispronounced word can spell doom on everyone within the area.

Mounts:
For some leaders, it isn't enough to have a normal horse or camel as their mount when they have to cross vast distances. They need a monstrous steed, one which inspires fear by the enemy and one which they know can save their lives if needed.

Such creatures needs years of training, from when its born till its adulthood. It can be varied from the noble griffons to the fierce hydras that a powerful warlord can ride. Though, depending on the nature of the beast, it can also vary in temper; griffons are known to be fierce, easily biting a man in half if its displeased, yet they are loyal to those whom earn their trust, whereas the demonic nightmare steeds are known to born those who doesn't savor its appetite for death and destruction.
Keep such steeds happy, or else you'll find its claws and teeth in the wrong flesh!

Blasts across Afghanistan target Shi'ites, 59 dead (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? A suicide attack killed dozens of Shi'ite Muslims at a crowded Kabul shrine on Tuesday, and four others died in a smaller blast in a key northern city, in the worst sectarian violence Afghanistan has seen since the fall of the Taliban.

The Kabul bomb was the deadliest in the capital since 2008, and punctured any lingering sense of optimism from a conference on Monday where Western allies made firm but not specific promises to support Afghanistan after troops leave in 2014.

Bodies and blood were scattered down a street in the heart of old Kabul where a crowd of hundreds had gathered to mark the festival of Ashura, with chanting, and self-flagellation. At least 55 were killed and 160 wounded, some critically.

Afghans, who have previously been spared the large-scale sectarian attacks that regularly trouble Iraq and neighboring Pakistan, now face the grim prospect of a new type of bloodshed being added to the dangers of daily life.

"This is the first time on such an important religious day in Afghanistan that terrorism of that horrible nature is taking place," Afghan President Hamid Karzai told journalists in Germany, where the conference on Afghanistan's future was held.

Outside a Kabul hospital, mourners cried near a pile of bloody clothes and shoes. A woman in a dark headscarf clutching a bloodstained sports shoe said her son, in his early 20s, had died. "They killed my son ... this is his shoe," she wailed.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks in Kabul and northern Mazar-i-Sharif. The Taliban strongly condemned the bombings and blamed "invader enemies."

Afghanistan has a history of tension and violence between Sunnis and the Shi'ite minority. But since the fall of the Taliban the country had avoided the large scale sectarian attacks that have troubled neighboring Pakistan.

"Afghanistan has been at war for 30 years and terrible things have happened, but one of the things that Afghans have been spared generally has been what appears to be this kind of very targeted sectarian attack," said Kate Clark, from the Afghanistan Analysts Network.

"We don't know who planted the bomb yet and it is dangerous to jump to conclusions but if it was Taliban, it marks something really serious, and dangerous, and very troubling."

ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Shortly after the Kabul blast, a bicycle bomb exploded near the main mosque in northern Mazar-i-Sharif city, killing four, injuring 17 others, and sparking a fight at a university mosque where Shi'ites and Sunnis were both praying.

"Enemies wanted to target the Muslim precession attending prayer, but because of tight security they failed," the city's senior police detective Abdul Raoof Taj, told Reuters.

Four people were injured in the mosque scuffle, which broke out when worshippers began arguing about the blast.

Police later defused a mine, found near the site of the explosion and likely intended to target rescuers and security forces attending to victims of the bomb.

A motorbike bomb also appeared to be aimed at Shi'ite worshippers in southern Kandahar city, the Taliban's spiritual home and centre of a strong push by NATO-led troops to push the insurgents out of their stronghold.

It exploded prematurely, injuring two policemen and three civilians, but causing no deaths.

"We cannot say for certain who the bomber's target was, but it was probably the Ashura (ceremonies)," said Kandahar police chief Abdul Raziq.

"We have 100 per cent security. The enemies cannot enter the prayer sites. With such actions they want to show they exist."

The Shi'ite Muslim festival of Ashura marks the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Hussein in the battle of Karbala in Iraq in the year 680.

Ashura is the biggest event in the Shi'ite Muslim calendar, when large processions are vulnerable to militant attacks, including suicide bombings. Pakistan has deployed tens of thousands of paramilitary soldiers and police during Ashura.

Blood has spilled between Pakistan's majority Sunni and minority Shi'ite militants for decades.

Sectarian strife has intensified since Sunni militants deepened ties with al Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban insurgents after Pakistan joined the U.S.-led campaign against militancy after the September 11 attacks.
