Origin of Israel VC's & Startup Culture ? BUSINESS, INNOVATION ...

Today was an eye-opening day, both because of the quality of our speakers and the breadth of topics we covered.? It was amazing to finally see what we have been discussing in class for the last six weeks come alive.

?

Ed Mlavsky, widely regarded as the father of Israeli venture capital, spoke to us today about venture capital in Israel, and honestly there is probably no one more knowledgeable on the entire situation.? What I thought to be one of the more interesting topics he touched on was how to manage a start-up founded in Israel, with a product designed for western consumers.? ?The cultural gap seems quite wide, and although we had heard from other speakers that American management does the best job of making the switch, Mlavsky argued just the opposite.? He is firmly in the position that Israeli companies should be in the hands of Israeli?s.? It is interesting to contemplate that within small companies an ?us vs them,? sort of relationship could come about, just between teams in different locations.

?

Ebay recently purchased The Gift Project an Israeli founded company that allows users to split the cost of gifts purchased for others online.? As ingenious as the business model is, I found the most fascinating part of this visit to be the co-founder himself, Ron Gura.? He seems to be the absolute embodiment of the young, fearless Israeli entrepreneur we have been learning so much about.? Ron Gura is in his late twenties, has sold a company to Ebay for millions of dollars, and talks about in a startlingly casual manner.? This brings me back to a conversation I had last night.? Out and about I started a conversation with some Israelis.? As we got to talking they asked what I was doing in Israel, and I told them a little about the class, studying business innovation and entrepreneurship, and they were astonished.? They were sure there was some communication barrier, something lost in translation.? They could not fathom that I had come from the US to Israel to study business.? These ideals are so deeply engrained in their culture and thinking it, where as we have a whole class set up to study it.

?

Another testament to the amazing startup culture of Israel is Elevator, a start-up accelerator.? For equity in a start-up Elevator provides a small amount of cash, plus legal, marketing, and PR services, and helps companies network, finding VC partners, and any other potentially beneficial partners.? This is such a unique phenomenon that could only come about in a culture and marketplace that is centered around entrepreneurship.? The two people we met with were in their early twenties.? It was quite eye opening to think that peers of mine just a couple years down the road could be accomplishing such impressive things.

Today has proved to me just how dynamic the start-up industry is, and the complexities of going from an idea to an actual company, and at the IDC we got a view into the very early stages of a start-up, pitched to us by two students in the Zell program.? It was quite interesting to see the dichotomy between the successful Gift Project, and this brand new start up HocSpot, seeing both ends of a wide spectrum of stages of a start up.? What a day.

The Deep Blue Sea: movie review

"The Deep Blue Sea" opens with Sam?uel Barber's beautiful Vio?lin Concerto, the sound of a ticking clock, and the on-screen legend "London, Around 1950." It's night, and the camera tracks very slowly along a shabby street before tilting up to a third-floor window where we see Hester Collyer (Rachel Weisz). We enter the apartment and watch her calmly prepare to kill herself, by both taking pills and turning on the gas. It's the suicide equivalent of wearing a belt and suspenders.

Once we get to know her better and learn the circumstances leading to her current actions, this apparent surfeit of caution seems out of character: In matters of love, romance, and sex, she has thrown caution to the wind. As the camera smoothly follows her around the room and her mind wanders to some brief flashbacks, the film is more concerned with setting a tragic/romantic mood than giving us a lot of detail. The 10-minute opening sequence is shot almost like a silent movie, with no more than a line or two spoken.

This might seem odd, since "The Deep Blue Sea" is adapted from a 1952 stage drama by Terence Rattigan, and stage dramas tend to lean heavily on dialogue. Rattigan was one of the leading British playwrights of the 1940s and '50s, until the London stage was rattled, first by John Osborne and the so-called Angry Young Men, then by Harold Pinter. Suddenly Rattigan's work ? "The Browning Version," "Separate Tables," and "The Winslow Boy" are the best known on the American side of the pond ? looked hopelessly bourgeois in comparison.

One good Terence deserves another, and, in this case, that would be director Terence Davies, one of the great stylists in contemporary British cinema. Davies made his reputation with a series of autobiographical films ? the two distributed in the States were "Distant Voices, Still Lives" and "The Long Day Closes" ? that were as brutally depressing as they were aesthetically striking. Davies's storytelling techniques in these films may have been slow as molasses, but were so fresh and different as to make the ordeal of reliving his life somewhere in the vicinity of "worthwhile."

After he ran out of autobiographical material, Davies directed adaptations of novels by John Kennedy Toole ("The Neon Bible") and Edith Wharton ("The House of Mirth"), neither of which made use of his greatest talent ? the ability to create a sense of being there, of experiencing a kind of hyper-reality. (The best comparison would be Terrence Malick ? yes, another Terry ? in "The Tree of Life.") "The Deep Blue Sea" is much more in sync with Davies's style.

What we learn about Hester is that she has thrown away her marriage to a judge (Simon Russell Beale) ? together they were Sir and Lady ? because of her all-consuming passion for Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), a shallow, maladjusted former RAF pilot with a drinking problem. Freddie may love her in his way, but it's not a very committed way; he is beyond unreliable. It's the hopelessness of her relationship to Freddie that has driven her to the opening suicide attempt.

In addition to Davies's visual style, the film benefits from precision acting from players who get the most out of Rattigan's dialogue. The only problem with the casting is that Weisz looks too young. A crucial part of the plot's dynamic is that Hester is 10 years older than Freddie and more than 10 years younger than her husband. Weisz looks perfectly age-appropriate with Hiddleston. If you can get past that, "The Deep Blue Sea" is a fine example of a director bringing just enough of his style to revitalize possibly dated material. Grade: A- (Rated R for a scene of sexuality and nudity.)

Internet Advertising Options By Pradeep Aggarwal

Your online business will likely require more advertising than a contemporary business downtown, yet some new to the world of online business do not spend the time and money to advertise their business appropriately and are, in turn, loosing money. Your online business is crammed into the world wide web along with thousands of others selling the same product or service as yourself. Consider this scenario: In your hometown you want to open an art supply store. In that same town there are thousands of art supply stores. In order for your business to be successful, it will have to stand out in some way from the others. This is exactly what is happening when a business is opened online. There is so much competition, that you must take drastic measures to ensure that you are getting noticed. Advertising can be done in so many ways online. These are some of the most successful ways that you can promote your online business.

Advertising in e-zines is a popular way to promote your online business. Ezines are the magazines of the internet; they written on a particular subject and read by those interested in that subject. Therefore, ezine readers are already potential customers and advertising your site in ezines that are related to your business is almost guaranteed to help drive traffic to your site and increase sales for your product. You should be sure when advertising in ezines that you are not advertising along side competitors. Ask the ezine producer if there is a policy concerning posting competing ads. It is also a good idea to subscribe to the ezine before making a decision about whether or not to advertise in it. An ezine that runs fewer ads is a better choice than one that runs many ads. You can look at the online Directory of Ezines to find publications that are relevant to your company.

Pay-per-click programs are an excellent way to advertise your business without taking a risk that you have advertised in the wrong place. With pay-per-click, you can advertise you site and only pay for those who click the link and go to your site. Another popular pay-per program is the pay-per-lead program that allows you to only pay for leads. Usually this means that you pay for only those who download a trail, fill out a form or enter a sweepstakes; whatever you choose. Lastly you can display pay-per-click banner ads in which your company would be allowed to place a banner on their site and you will be charged for every click that your banner receives.

Opt-In email is a great way to advertise your business, however it is expensive and it can be misused very easily. Using opt-in emails, you would submit your sales copy to the company that will in turn email it to those on their mailing list. You should be very careful since some of the companies that advertise their mailing lists as opt-in email service is sometimes really SPAM. It is essential that you have a perfect and effective sales letter when using opt-in mailing lists. Without and effective sales copy your money and time have been wasted. Global economy fears stalk markets

LONDON (AP) ? A run of poor economic figures weighed on markets Thursday in what is turning out to be one of the worst weeks for stocks this year.

Disappointing figures out of China and the 17-country eurozone have prompted investors to cash out of stocks, following a strong run in previous weeks. Many traders are wary of further pushing up indexes, many of which recently hit multi-month highs.

The catalyst to Thursday's retreat was a Chinese manufacturing index compiled by HSBC. Its main index fell to 48.1 in March from 49.6 in February. Figures below 50 indicate that manufacturing is contracting.

Earlier this week, soft Chinese housing data and a warning from miner BHP Billiton have stoked concerns about the outlook in the world's second-largest economy, which has shored up the global economy over the past few years.

A similarly weak eurozone survey from financial information company Markit only added to concerns. Its composite purchasing managers' index, which combines both the services and manufacturing sectors, fell to a below-forecast 48.8 points in March from 49.3 the month before.

Since stocks are a leading indicator of economic activity a few months down the line, investors are worried that the recent improvements have run out of steam.

Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International, said the disappointing data would likely "instill a risk off tone for the remainder of the week."

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 1.1 percent at 5,829 while Germany's DAX fell 1.7 percent to 3,466. The CAC-40 in France was 1.7 percent lower at 3,466.

The euro suffered in the more risk-averse environment, trading 0.5 percent lower at $1.3151.

Wall Street was poised for a retreat, too, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.6 percent.

One potential boon from the re-evaluation in global growth prospects is that the pressure on oil prices has eased. The benchmark New York rate was down $1.39 at $105.88.

In recent weeks, the rise in oil prices had become an increasing worry in the markets as it stokes inflation and hinders economic activity.

The retreat in Asia earlier was less marked than that in Europe. The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo ended 0.4 percent higher at 10,127.08 after Japan announced it had posted its first trade surplus in five months in February, on a recovery in auto and electronics exports to the United States.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed up 0.2 percent at 20,901.56 while mainland China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.1 percent to 2,375.77.

More travelers took to the sky in 2011

By msnbc.com news services

The number of passengers that flew on U.S. airlines increased to 730 million in 2011, up 1.3 percent from the previous year, according to data released by Department of Transportation on Thursday.

Nearly 640 million passengers -- an all-time high -- flew on domestic flights while 92.5 million flew internationally on U.S. airlines.

DOT's report on annual airline traffic also ranked Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International as the most trafficked airport for domestic departures, and Delta and Southwest, respectively, as the airlines that carried the most international and domestic passengers in 2011.

Though the increase in passengers in 2011 was small, the Federal Aviation Administration recently announced that airline passenger travel will double by 2032, reaching 1.2 billion.

In February, DOT released its annual report on airline performance, showing a plateau with few drastic improvements or declines in service. (See: Report: Air travel didn't improve much in 2011)

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? A British tourist snatched by Somali gunmen from a resort island in Kenya was freed on Wednesday after more than six months in captivity, Britain's Foreign Office said.

Judith Tebbutt was taken in September. Gunmen killed her husband, David Tebbutt, during the attack. But the kidnapped woman told BBC that she did not know of her husband's death until two weeks after her capture.

"I just assumed he was alive," she said. Her son told her of the killing. "That was difficult," she said.

Tebbutt told Britain's ITV News she was relieved to be released after such a long time in captivity. She said she is in good health and slept well during the kidnapping. She got sick three times but was given medication and healed each time.

She said her captors made her "feel as comfortable as possible."

"The circumstances ? with my husband passing away ? made it harder," she told ITV. "I'm just happy to be released and I'm looking forward to seeing my son who successfully secured my release. I don't know how he did it, but he did which is great."

An official with the Somali militia Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama who asked not to be named said a ransom was paid to pirates for Tebbutt's release. No figure was given. Pirates have long earned multimillion dollar ransoms for taking ships and crew hostage. Families of individual hostages or hostage families have reportedly paid far less.

Britain's Foreign Office said: "Our priority now is to get her to a place of safety." Tebbutt was expected to fly to Kenya on Wednesday.

"We are so pleased to hear of her release. The prime minister was actively engaged in and pressured elders for negotiations to release her," said Abdirahman Omar Osman, the Somalia government spokesman.

Osman declined to comment on reports of a ransom.

The attack on the Tebbutt family came during a string of assault and kidnappings by Somali gunmen near the coastal resort town of Lamu. Kenya's military cited those attacks as the reason it sent troops into Somalia to attack al-Shabab militants in October.

Gunmen entered the Tebbutts' resort room easily on the night of Sept. 10 ? their resort door was only a piece of colorful cloth. Police believed that David Tebbutt resisted and was shot. The Kiwayu Safari Village resort is 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Lamu. It consists of 18 luxury cottages spread along a private beach.

In October gunmen kidnapped a disabled French woman who lived part-time in Lamu. She died in captivity.

Kidnapping is big business in Somalia, where opportunities to make money are limited.

In January, U.S. Navy SEALs parachuted into Somalia and hiked to where a criminal gang was holding a 32-year-old American and a 60-year-old Dane kidnapped last October. Nine captors were killed and the two hostages were rescued.

Pirates still hold an American hostage taken in January. Other hostages held in Somalia include two Spanish aid workers seized in neighboring Kenya, a French military adviser and hundreds of sailors of various nationalities hijacked by pirates at sea.

Rick Blears, a spokesman for Save Our Seafarers, an anti-piracy group, said he welcomed the news of Tebbutt's release but hoped her situation could shed light on all the captive sailors.

"Her release has highlighted the fact that the media spotlight is firmly on kidnapped civilians rather than any of the 233 working seafarers who are currently in captivity and have been so many months," he said. "Many of them are kept in appalling conditions while slow ransom negotiations with shipping insurers take place. Many of their families are just far too poor to pay any kind of random."
