Uber New York Doubles Drivers Pay - Business Insider

Uber is coming to the rescue of New Yorkers at a time when the subway system is shut down, and there's a lack of buses and taxis due to Hurricane Sandy.

The startup, which uses smartphones to connect limo drivers and riders in real time, is paying its drivers double to make sure there are enough cars on the road, while keeping the cost for the passenger the same.

"Our goal is to be a reliable transportation alternative,"?Uber General Manager Josh Mohrer tells Business Insider.?

Uber normally adjusts its prices during peak demand times in order to keep cars on the road. But Mohrer says Uber will eat the loss for the time being. ?

Mohrer wouldn't say how much money Uber could potentially lose, but he says it will be a significant expense.

"We are monitoring the city's transportation health closely and will keep this running as long as we can today while we figure out more sustainable?ways to keep supply up while the city is in need," Mohrer says.

Besides the good publicity from helping out New Yorkers, Uber may want to restore its reputation among riders after pulling a short-lived experiment with letting Uber users hail taxis with its app.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney pledged Wednesday to deliver the "real change" he says his Democratic opponent promised but has not achieved.

With President Barack Obama in New Jersey surveying storm damage, Romney softened his line of attack against the president. And in a remarkable move just six days before Election Day, he did not mention Obama's name in any of his three rallies across Florida.

But in a race that polls show to be extremely close, the Republican candidate found an avenue to challenge Obama nonetheless.

"I don't just talk about change," Romney told an estimated 2,000 supporters at an airport rally before outlining general plans to improve the nation's economy. "I actually have a plan to execute change and make it happen."

Later, at an evening rally in Jacksonville, he called for a new direction without naming the man he usually blames for the nation's ills: "These are tough time for the people of America," he told a rowdy crowd of more than 4,000.

Romney aides concede that the political balancing act is not over as the nation continues to focus on Hurricane Sandy's aftermath. The day before, Romney canceled some rallies and converted one into a storm relief event aimed at collecting donations for those in need.

Back on the campaign trail Wednesday, Romney encouraged Floridians to donate "a dollar or two" to storm victims across the East Coast.

"Today we wanted to make sure we kept a positive tone and talked about what the governor would hope to do on Day One of his presidency," adviser Kevin Madden said aboard Romney's campaign plane.

That's exactly what Romney did in campaign speeches in Tampa and Coral Gables that were stripped of his standard anti-Obama political jabs.

"We can't change the course of America if we keep on attacking each other. We have got to come together," the Republican told a largely Hispanic crowd inside the University of Miami basketball arena.

"When there are challenges, we come together."

Earlier at the Tampa rally he said, "People coming together is what's also going to happen, I believe, on Nov. 7," a reference to the day after the election.

The Romney campaign stopped short of praising Obama's disaster-relief leadership, which New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, has described as "terrific."

"I refer to Gov. Christie's remarks. I believe the response is still going on, so I'm not in a position to qualify the response by the federal government," Madden said.

It's unclear how long the positive tone will last. Even on Wednesday, the speaker who introduced Romney, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, couldn't help but jab the president. Bush's brother, former President George W. Bush, has been a frequent target of the Obama re-election effort because the economic meltdown began on his watch.

"Do you honestly think that this president is capable of bringing people together?" Bush asked as the crowd shouted, "No!" ''His entire strategy is to blame others - starting with my brother, of course. Basically, he blames every possible thing rather than having the humility to be able to reach out and to find common ground."

The storm has created an air of uncertainty in Romney's Boston headquarters. Aides report that their internal polling offers a better outlook than recent public polling that gives Obama an edge in some swing states, but they concede that the national distraction has frozen any momentum Romney had coming out of the presidential debates.

At the same time, the campaign is sketching a schedule for the final days of the campaign. Madden said it was unclear whether Romney would visit any storm-ravaged areas.

Romney is expected to campaign in Virginia on Thursday and Ohio on Friday after a brief stop in Wisconsin. The campaign is planning to host an Ohio rally Friday evening featuring dozens of Republican officials to launch a four-day sprint to Election Day. On Saturday, Romney heads to swing state Colorado.

Food & Drink Innovation Network ? NEW ICE MOON CAKE FROM ...

October 30th, 2012

In their fifth year of collaborating with designers to create limited edition Christmas cakes, H?agen-Dazs this year commissioned British design duo, Doshi Levien, to combine their artistic vision with ice cream and unseen recipes.

The result ? the H?agen-Dazs Ice Moon Cake ? a Christmas dessert and the design duo?s first ever edible spherical prototype.

Doshi Levien, alias Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, bring the influence of their Indian-English origins and their ?British humour? to this project.

Each Ice Moon Cake is hand made in the H?agen-Dazs shop in Paris.

The cake consists of a pistachio biscuit base, layers of macadamia nut ice cream and meringue and a coating of raspberry sorbet.

Jonathan Levien said:

?The idea of working with H?agen-Dazs to create a cake made entirely of ice cream was irresistible.

?The moon idea came from many different places and has elements of fantasy, adventure and imagination.

?We imagined the shape and texture of an ice cream scoop being like the moon as in a famous childhood Bollywood song.

?We were reminded of the stop frame movie Le Voyage dans la Lune by Georges M?li?s and were also inspired by Armenian surrealist L?on Tutundjian?s relief work of 1929 where he worked with rounded shapes.?

Ed Culf, Marketing Director at H?agen-Dazs, said:

?It is always exciting to put H?agen-Dazs in front of designers and see it transformed into an art form.

?This year is no different and we are very proud of our Ice Moon Cake, created by Doshi Levien.

?We are confident it will be the stylish centrepiece on many Christmas tables this festive season.?

For the opportunity to purchase one of the fifty Ice Moon cakes available in the UK, visit www.facebook.com/haagendazs (RRP ?50)

Purchase includes hand delivery (conditions apply).

The cakes will also be available to guests at the Royal Albert Hall (RRP ?50).

Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed ...

In the wake of any major and destructive weather event, there is always confusion, misinformation, and disarray. But if you?re lucky enough to live in a place like the U.S., there is also a massive outpouring of aid.

Unfortunately, there are people out there who use both post-disaster confusion as well as the goodwill of others to grab a piece of the aid pie.

That being said, here?s a helpful list from Identity Theft 911, a group that specializes in ?identity and data risk management, resolution and education services,? detailing the top 5 best ways to avoid getting scammed by thieves looking to take advantage of Superstorm Sandy [all block quotes from Identity Theft 911]:

Identity thieves:

Protect important information and documents. Whether you?re in a shelter, staying with friends, or crashing on your family?s couch, never let these items leave your sight. They are the key to your identity ? and you will need this information to prove who you are.

Another tip: Ask the post office to hold your mail if you have to leave your home. This will keep the bad guys from finding sensitive information that may be left in your mailbox.

Insurance scams

Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed Post Superstorm Sandy

If you?ve experienced damage to any of your personal property, call your insurance company first.? Don?t fall for fly-by-night ?professionals? who make false guarantees about a claims check, damage appraisal, inspection or water quality testing.

Illegitimate websites

Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed Post Superstorm Sandy

Double check the legitimacy of the site you?re clicking to from your email, Facebook or elsewhere. When in doubt, check your local American Red Cross or the National FEMA site to find local help.

Fake charitable organizations

Watch out for scammy charitable organizations that have names similar to reputable institutions. These sites often end in .com (instead of the typical .org for nonprofits).

They?re designed to fool you into thinking you?re donating to a good cause when, in reality, you?re donating your money and personal and financial information to thieves.

Photos with malware

This scam strikes after any type of disaster or tragedy. Thieves count on people to be hungry for news, so they infect images and video with malware.

Stick with legitimate sites, such as your local news station or newspaper for the latest information. Be wary of links on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites.

Iveco Presents LNG, CNG Vehicles in Brussels ... - LNG World News

Iveco Presents LNG, CNG Vehicles in Brussels, Belgium

Iveco has presented its natural gas range at the ?European Natural Gas Summit 2012?, an event focused on the natural gas vehicle market, held in Brussels the 24 and 25 October.

Iveco is European leader in the production and marketing of natural gas vehicles, that represent an important advantage both in economic and in environmental terms.

The company has a full range of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles, from 3,5 t for the Daily Natural Power to the 12-16 t for the Eurocargo, to the 40 t for the Stralis CNG. An Iveco Stralis LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) version completes the range.

The company has long been committed to researching and developing new solutions in the sector of natural gas vehicles, with 12.000 units circulating in private company and public sector fleets, of which 5.000 Daily, 2.000 vehicles in the medium and heavy range and 5.000 buses.

?Natural gas vehicle technology is a priority for Iveco,? said Alessandro Mortali, Senior Vice President Heavy Range at Iveco. ?We have early understood the importance of methane as an alternative energy source. CNG and LNG are mature technologies, delivering low-impact transport solutions: CNG vehicles are ideal for urban missions, LNG vehicles allow the use of natural gas in regional and national distribution?.

The CNG technology guarantees considerable advantages from an environmental point of view, such as lower CO2 emissions, less particulates emissions and reduced levels of noise. In addition, the LNG system also enables a reduction in vehicle weight, allowing an increase in load-carrying capacity.

The use of natural gas-powered vehicles presents an economic advantage for vehicle operators compared to Diesel fuel. A Stralis LNG delivers a reduction in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of up to 12% on a regional delivery mission, over an average distance of 80.000 kilometres a year, for five years.

The Iveco Natural gas vehicles are recognized by important fleet operators. Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd, following impressive results of a year-long trial, has taken delivery of an additional 14 gas powered Iveco Stralis 6?2 rigid trucks. Moreover, Sydeme, the public company in charge of the management of domestic waste in Moselle-Est (France), has recently renewed its fleet 34 new natural gas vehicles, among which three Daily and 25 Stralis.

A full range of Natural Gas Vehicles

Daily Natural Power

The Daily Natural Power is equipped with an FPT Industrial CNG engine of 136 HP (100 kW) with three way catalytic converter, using a stoichiometric (with chemically correct air-fuel ratio) combustion regime that brings characteristics of reliability and durability and ensures exhaust emissions well below the limits required by the European EEV legislation in force.

This system can detect the composition of the gas used and is able to adapt the actual air/fuel ratio accordingly, in order to maintain low emissions without sacrificing performance. The positive ignition results in engine noise significantly lower than that of a Diesel equivalent, so that these vehicles are particularly suitable for night-time use in urban centres, without requiring additional sound insulation measures.

Eurocargo CNG

The Eurocargo Natural Power is available in versions with gross vehicle weight from 12 to 16 t, special 6 cylinder 200 HP engine for CNG and 9-speed manual gearbox. The CNG Eurocargo has by far the lowest environmental impact among internal combustion engine: no sulphur, hydrocarbons or particulate at the exhaust; CO2 emissions lower up to 20% compared to Diesel engines of equal performance.

Stralis CNG

The Stralis CNG is equipped with the Cursor 8 CNG engine, with a 7.8 litre displacement. The Stralis CNG range covers applications from 18 to 26 t with configurations of two and three axles, 4?2 and 6x2x4, the latter having a trailing positively steered axle with pneumatic suspension.

It is ideal for urban missions and night time delivery. It is equipped with the new automatic Allison 3200 gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter and 6 speeds and includes an integrated primary auxiliary brake.

Stralis LNG

The Stralis LNG Natural Power is ideal for regional and national distribution missions, such as fuel transportation. One of the key benefits of the LNG technology is that it guarantees a much greater range for vehicles, that can reach up to 750 km. The vehicle is equipped with Cursor 8 natural gas engine with a power rating 330 HP, manual gearbox, production line Intarder and EBS. It is built for applications carrying between 18 and 40 tons.

The market opportunities for these vehicles are particularly strong in the food and beverage sectors, fuel transportation, among logistics operators and firms engaged in night-time delivery, where the reduction of noise levels is guaranteed by spark ignition engines. On average, the noise reduction for natural gas fuelled Stralis vehicles is between 3 and 6 decibels compared to a vehicle with the same power rating running on Diesel.

After Irene, High Anxiety Around Hurricane Sandy

New York area families who were slammed by last year's Hurricane Irene are girding for a storm that promises to hit even harder. Still hours away from the worst of Hurricane Sandy, those who are in its path are in a state of high anxiety, holding their collective breath.

Kelly Salus, a 42-year-old mother of four from suburban New Jersey, has barely recovered from the hurricane last August, which left seven feet of water in her house. She and her husband were taken to dry land by boat.

It was there at the Pompton Lakes fire house Sunday where Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency and ordered evacuations of the state's barrier islands and Atlantic City casinos.

ABC News to Broadcast Special Expanded One-Hour Editions of "World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Nightline" Dedicated to Storm Coverage

The governor has predicted that residents could be out of power for up to a week after Sandy, now a category 2 hurricane, hits land later tonight.

The town's residents were asked to voluntarily evacuate because of power lines so close to houses, but Salus said, "I don't know where we would go with no family close by."

The special needs teacher and her four children, aged 4 to 17, are homebound today with all schools closed in New Jersey.

Last year, she and her husband, who is in pharmaceutical sales, had no flood insurance because they don't live in a flood zone. They got help from FEMA, but were out of pocket more than $25,000 when flood waters filled their house, destroying the furnace, washer and dryer and most of their finished basement.

Hurricane Sandy: Reporter, Producer Hit by Storm Wave Watch Video

Hurricane Sandy: Full Coverage

While cleaning out the basement in preparation for Hurricane Irene, Salus reached for a cast-iron roasting pan that landed on her head, breaking her nose and giving her a concussion.

"It was on a top shelf and I reached for it and it fell on me and knocked me out," she said. "I had two black eyes and I was starting a new job ? I looked like mess, like someone had beat me up."

While coastal residents are more worried about the tidal surge, Salus said the rain and wind is her concern.

"I am hopeful if there is less than 10 inches of rain," she said. "Now we have insurance and a drain system and sump pumps...we should be able to handle it."

Hurricane Sandy: Live Storm Tracker

"We are as prepared as we can be," Salus said. "The winds can be a tad scary and downed power lines. But we saw the worst 15 months ago. We can handle it."

Lisa Palmer of Glastonbury, Conn., looks at old photos of the Hurricane of 1938 as she waits anxiously for another historic storm, Hurricane Sandy, to move up the coast.

"It's a little unsettling," said Palmer, 62, and a retired landscaper. "The Main Street was completely flooded. Stores had water up to the second-floor windows. People were polling in rowboats. We don't have a rowboat."

Palmer's home is on the Connecticut River flood plain, so she likely won't be inundated, but the town's sewage treatment plant could flood, as it did last year during Hurricane Irene, leaving them without water.

She has six prize goats, two of them milking. Hurricane-force wind gusts could also hamper getting buckets of water to the barn. "Livestock need fresh water all the time and those who are milking need more than ever," said Palmer.

"I have to get milk to the barn once a day and I am not sure I can tie a rope around my waist to get there," said Palmer. "I don't know how bad the gusts of winds are going to be. I am afraid to get out of the house."

What are you reading during Hurricane Sandy? | Drexel Publishing ...

Hurricane Sandy?s massive wallop on the Mid-Atlantic States begins today. I don?t expect to? have power (in my neighborhood we lose power if someone sneezes too hard) , so it?s reading by candlelight for me. I?ll be enjoying a few things, but I?m really excited about the 11th issue of New Ohio Review. The theme is collaboration. I don?t get a chance to read journals as often as I like, but this one was a birthday present to myself because it looked so extraordinary.

Why did I order this issue a few weeks ago? Because of what?s happening inside: Tony Hoagland has a piece of drama (theatre drama, not office drama). Hoagland is most known for poetry, so I?m really interested in reading this. The issue has poems from Denise Duhamel, Jim Daniels, Billy Collins,? and many others. The features section has several collaborative pieces including one by Duhamel and Amy Lemmon, and another by Ron Padgett with writing from Allen Ginsberg and Kenneth Koch.? I?m also looking forward to reading work by writers I don?t know (in several genres).

New writers, new work from established writers, the craft of blending different voices through a common theme ? this is why I love reading journals. It?s like hearing good music performed live: as you make your way through the issue, consider that the pieces you?re experiencing got their world-debut in this place, at this time ? and you have a piece of that. Someday Duhamel?s ?Old Love Poems? on page 16 will appear in a book, and eventually it might be all over the Web, but in these pages is how Duhamel first shared it with the world. Pretty cool, if you ask me. If you?re interested in finding a journal you like, visit newpages.com.

And you?re reading during Hurricane Sandy?

How would you change Jawbones Big Jambox

In the ever-shrinking world of tech, for a company to release a jumbo-sized variant of a product is something of a novelty. Jawbone's Big Jambox has taken a few courses of steroids, with natty design language and 15-plus hours of battery life. We were certainly fans of the unit, although its audio can get a bit on the shaky side when you turn it up to 11, but that was just in the confines of our review. What's it been like to use this thing on a regular basis for the last six months? We're asking you to place yourselves in the stylish shoes of designer Yves Behar and tell us what you'd have done differently.

Messi receives Golden Boot as Europe's top scorer

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:48 a.m. ET Oct. 29, 2012

The Associated Press

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was presented with his second Golden Boot award on Monday in recognition for scoring the most goals in Europe's domestic leagues last season.

The 25-year-old Messi scored a Spanish-league record 50 goals for Barcelona, edging out fellow Spanish league star Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid by four goals.

Messi dedicated the award to his teammates, with Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol present for the ceremony in Barcelona.

"It is a prize for scoring goals, but without my teammates I couldn't have scored them," Messi said. "I share this award with them as I always do.

"I don't fight for individual awards, I fight for titles. My goals are reclaiming the league crown, winning the Copa del Rey and the winning the Champions League again. Those are my goals, team goals."

The Argentina international won his first Golden Boot in 2010 for his 34 goals that helped Barcelona win the league title.

Messi is among the favorites to win the 2012 Ballon d'Or for the world's best player.

"We won't see another player like him, and if we do, it won't be for a very long time," said Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova. "It's not just for the goals he scores, but for how he sees and understands the game, that is what makes him so great. On Saturday, he ran 50 meters to defend a corner in the 89th minute with a 5-0 lead. Not many players would have done that."

Luis Suarez Miramontes, the former Spain international and 1960 Ballon d'Or winner, presented the award.

Messi, nicknamed "The Flea" for his uncanny ability to dribble through defenders, has shattered a number of records over the past year.

He scored an unprecedented 73 goals in all competitions for Barcelona last season, breaking the previous European club record of 67 goals set by Bayern Munich's Gerd Mueller in 1972-73 and the prior world club mark of 70 established by Archie Stark of Bethlehem Steel in the American Soccer League in 1924-25.

In March, Messi passed Cesar Rodriguez's 57-year-old milestone of 232 goals to become Barcelona all-time leading scorer. He also scored a European Cup-record-tying 14 goals in the Champions League, where he netted a record five goals in one game.

Messi has scored 17 goals in all competitions to start this season, and has his sights set on yet another milestone he is sure to reach very soon. He is just two goals away from equaling Brazil great Pele's feat of 75 goals for club and country in one calendar year, set in 1958.

"Obviously, it's an honor to be close to the numbers of a person who is so important to football," Messi said. "But, again, they are only statistics.

"My goal is to win as many titles as I can before the end of my career. I have always been like that. Then I can look back at what I have won and take stock of my career."

Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe.

The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. This exposes how quantum predictions challenge our best understanding about the nature of space and time, Einstein's theory of relativity.

"We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He is now at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore.

Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test.

The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. The problem is that quantum theory predicts bizarre behaviour for particles -- such as two 'entangled' particles behaving as one even when far apart. This seems to violate our sense of cause and effect in space and time. Physicists call such behaviour 'nonlocal'.

It was Einstein who first drew attention to the worrying implications of what he termed the "spooky action at a distance" predicted by quantum mechanics. Measure one in a pair of entangled atoms to have its magnetic 'spin' pointing up, for example, and quantum physics says the other can immediately be found pointing in the opposite direction, wherever it is and even when one could not predict beforehand which particle would do what. Common sense tells us that any such coordinated behaviour must result from one of two arrangements. First, it could be arranged in advance. The second option is that it could be synchronised by some signal sent between the particles.

In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Specifically, a test of a 'Bell inequality' checks whether two particles' behaviour could have been based on prior arrangements. If measurements violate the inequality, pairs of particles are doing what quantum theory says: acting without any 'local hidden variables' directing their fate. Starting in the 1980s, experiments have found violations of Bell inequalities time and time again.

Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed. However, conventional tests of Bell inequalities can never completely kill hope of a common sense story involving signals that don't flout the principles of relativity. That's why the researchers set out to devise a new inequality that would probe the role of signals directly.

Experiments have already shown that if you want to invoke signals to explain things, the signals would have to be travelling faster than light -- more than 10,000 times the speed of light, in fact. To those who know that Einstein's relativity sets the speed of light as a universal speed limit, the idea of signals travelling 10,000 times as fast as light already sets alarm bells ringing. However, physicists have a getout: such signals might stay as 'hidden influences' -- useable for nothing, and thus not violating relativity. Only if the signals can be harnessed for faster-than-light communication do they openly contradict relativity.

The new hidden influence inequality shows that the get-out won't work when it comes to quantum predictions. To derive their inequality, which sets up a measurement of entanglement between four particles, the researchers considered what behaviours are possible for four particles that are connected by influences that stay hidden and that travel at some arbitrary finite speed.

Mathematically (and mind-bogglingly), these constraints define an 80-dimensional object. The testable hidden influence inequality is the boundary of the shadow this 80-dimensional shape casts in 44 dimensions. The researchers showed that quantum predictions can lie outside this boundary, which means they are going against one of the assumptions. Outside the boundary, either the influences can't stay hidden, or they must have infinite speed.

Experimental groups can already entangle four particles, so a test is feasible in the near future (though the precision of experiments will need to improve to make the difference measurable). Such a test will boil down to measuring a single number. In a Universe following the standard relativistic laws we are used to, 7 is the limit. If nature behaves as quantum physics predicts, the result can go up to 7.3.

So if the result is greater than 7 -- in other words, if the quantum nature of the world is confirmed -- what will it mean?

Here, there are two choices. On the one hand, there is the option to defy relativity and 'unhide' the influences, which means accepting faster-than-light communication. Relativity is a successful theory that researchers would not call into question lightly, so for many physicists this is seen as the most extreme possibility.

The remaining option is to accept that influences must be infinitely fast -- or that there exists some process that has an equivalent effect when viewed in our spacetime. The current test couldn't distinguish. Either way, it would mean that the Universe is fundamentally nonlocal, in the sense that every bit of the Universe can be connected to any other bit anywhere, instantly. That such connections are possible defies our everyday intuition and represents another extreme solution, but arguably preferable to faster-than-light communication.

"Our result gives weight to the idea that quantum correlations somehow arise from outside spacetime, in the sense that no story in space and time can describe them," says Nicolas Gisin, Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and member of the team.

The researchers that carried out the work, in addition to Dr Bancal and Prof Gisin, are Dr Stefano Pironio from the Free University of Bruxelles in Belgium, Professor Antonio Ac?n from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Dr Yeong-Cherng Liang from the University of Geneva, and Professor Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the Department of Physics of the National University of Singapore.

Health Insurance Companies Are Worried About A Romney Victory ...

mitt romney healthcareWASHINGTON (AP) ? You'd think health insurance CEOs would be chilling the bubbly with Republican Mitt Romney's improved election prospects, but instead they're in a quandary.

Although the industry hates parts of President Barack Obama's health care law, major outfits such as UnitedHealth Group and BlueCross Blue Shield also stand to rake in billions of dollars from new customers who'll get health insurance under the law. The companies already have invested tens of millions to carry it out.

Were Romney elected, insurers would be in for months of uncertainty as his administration gets used to Washington and tries to make good on his promise repeal Obama's law. Simultaneously, federal and state bureaucrats and the health care industry would face a rush of legal deadlines for putting into place the major pieces of what Republicans deride as "Obamacare."

Would they follow the law on the books or the one in the works? What would federal courts tell them to do?

The answers probably would hinge on an always unwieldy Congress.

Things could get grim for the industry if Republicans succeed in repealing the Affordable Care Act's subsidies and mandates, but leave standing its requirement that insurers cover people with health problems. If that's the outcome, the industry fears people literally could get health insurance on the way to the emergency room, and that would drive up premiums.

"There are a lot of dollars and a lot of staff time that's been put into place to make this thing operational," G. William Hoagland, until recently a Cigna vice president, said of the health care law.

Insurers "are not going to be out there saying, 'Repeal, repeal, repeal,'" added Hoagland, who oversaw public policy at the health insurance company. "They will probably try to find the particular provisions that cause them heartburn, but not throw the baby out with the bath water."

The Romney campaign isn't laying out specifics on how the candidate would carry out his repeal promise, other than to say the push would begin on his first day in office. Romney has hinted that he wants to help people with medical conditions, doesn't say what parts of the health care law he'd keep.

Likewise, America's Health Insurance Plans, the major industry trade group, isn't talking about what its members are telling the Romney campaign, though informal discussions are under way through intermediaries. Insurers like Romney's plan to privatize Medicare, and some point out that it looks a lot like Obama's approach to covering the uninsured.

Robert Laszewski, an industry consultant and blogger, says the tension is becoming unbearable.

"I spend a lot of time in executive offices and board rooms, and they are good Republicans who would like to see Romney win," said Laszewski. "But they are scared to death about what he's going to do."

There is no consensus among Republicans in Congress on how to replace Obama's law, much less anything like a bipartisan middle ground on health care, a necessity if the House retains its GOP majority and the Senate remains in Democratic hands.

In contrast, Obama's law is starting to look more and more like a tangible business opportunity. In a little over a year, some 30 million uninsured people will start getting coverage through a mix of subsidized private insurance for middle-class households and expanded Medicaid for low-income people. Many of the new Medicaid recipients would get signed up in commercial managed care companies.

A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers study estimated the new markets would be worth $50 billion to $60 billion in premiums in 2014, and as much as $230 billion annually within seven years.

Under the law, insurance companies would have to accept all applicants, including the sick. But the companies also would have a steady stream of younger, healthier customers required to buy their products, with the aid of new government subsidies. That finally could bring stability to the individual and small-business insurance markets.

At a time when employer coverage has been eroding, government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and now Obama's law are becoming the growth engines for the industry's bottom line. The trend seems too big to derail, says Morningstar analyst Matthew Coffina, who tracks the health insurance industry.

"I think it's limited what they'll be able to accomplish in terms of repeal," said Coffina. "We have to remember that Romney implemented very similar legislation" as governor of Massachusetts.

If Romney wins he's more likely to reduce the scope and scale of the law, Coffina added. Possibilities include delaying all or parts of the new coverage, particularly a Medicaid expansion that GOP governors don't like.

The industry has three items in particular it wants stripped out: cuts to Medicare Advantage private insurance plans; a requirement that insurers spend 80 percent of premiums on medical care or rebate the difference to their customers; and new taxes on insurance companies. But CEOs don't share the visceral objection that many Republicans have to a bigger government role in health care.

Industry executives "are Republicans in the sense that they're worried about the bottom line and they want to retain private sector involvement," said Hoagland, the former Cigna vice president. "But some of their bottom line is now driven by Medicare and Medicaid. So it's not like they're red or blue. It's more like purple."

YouTube Nonprofit Program Adds New Causes Feature for ...

Google recently added a new feature for its nonprofit program that aims to help charity organizations and other nonprofits that run YouTube channels gain traffic and views to help their fundraising or awareness campaigns.

Campaigns acts as a progress bar that tracks views for nonprofit video campaigns, much like the classic thermometer display that shows how much money a nonprofit or charity has raised toward a goal, event, or milestone.

With the Campaigns tool, nonprofits can not only track how many views they have and how many they need to reach their goals, but it can also actually help nonprofits drive traffic to their videos by showing the company?s measurable goal and prompting users to share the videos with others. Nonprofit videos on YouTube can also display prompts for volunteering, signing petitions, or donating to an organization or cause.

The YouTube Nonprofit Program is an extension of Google for Nonprofits that was created to help charities and causes gain an audience through YouTube?s video platform. It offers tools such as call-to-action overlays within videos, community forums, channel branding, and donation options.

Though views aren?t everything when it comes to raising money, getting petitions signed, or passing laws, public awareness is an essential first step to these actions and YouTube can be a very useful tool in helping nonprofits achieve these goals.

Giving these organizations a visual tool to help illustrate to viewers what they want and or need to achieve can help to make certain videos or channels go viral within a network of target users.

Google for Nonprofits offers many of the same tools and features as it does for other businesses and entrepreneurs, but often for discounted prices or even free of charge. Businesses need to apply to the Nonprofit Program to gain access to these discounted tools. Users that have been accepted to Google for Nonprofits are automatically given access to the tools in the YouTube Nonprofit Program.

How Do LCD TV's Differ From Flat Screen TV's

There are so many options for a HD TV today: LCD TV, LED TV, 3D TV ? the options can seem endless. Make sure to do ample research and ask around to find out what kind of plasma tv or HD TV is right for you.

View all articles by Peter Malcolm LCD TV's and flat screen TVs are fast becoming the television of choice for consumers looking for quality televisions. Both flat screen TVs and LCD televisions are getting quite a lot of attention which can make it difficult to understand the difference between each one and which TV is the best for an individual. To help make your TV choice, below is a guide on how LCD TV's differ from flat screen TV's.

An LCD TV is a flat panel television that uses Liquid Crystal Display technology that you will find in computer monitors, cell phones, etc. LCD panels are thin and require less power to operate. LCD panels consist of 2 layers of a glass-type material which are polarized and ?glued" together. One of the layers of the glass-type materials has been coated with a specific type of polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. Electric current will travel through the individual crystals which permits the crystals to block or pass light to produce the images you see. LCD crystals do not produce their own light therefore they use an external light source such as a LED or florescent bulb for the image to be produced. For an LCD TV to create an image the LCD chip pixels must be 'backlit'.

The images on an LCD TV are not "scanned" by an electron beam. Instead, the pixels of an LCD TV are quickly turned on and off which will all depend on the needs of the image. When the pixels are turned off, they do not permit the backlight through, and when turned on, they permit the backlight through. There is not any radiation emitted from the screen. LCD TV?s can be hung on a wall or placed on small stand or other furniture piece. These TVs are a popular choice for TV and home theater viewing.

Flat screen TVs integrate stunning designs and advanced technologies that provides consumers with a true cinematic experience. A flat screen TV creates the ultimate TV viewing experience. Flat screen TVs includes LEDs, LCDs and plasma. No matter where you are sitting you will have a perfect view. Plasma TVs provide sharp details, bold colors, sharp details, and incredible clarity. Flat screens have fully flat front surfaces and include numerous electronic visual display technologies. They are very lightweight and thin and have video displays that use cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Plasmas provide excellent contrast and black level performance and have wider viewing angles than the LCD. They are a good choice if you want to watch sports or play video games as they provide good viewing of natural motion with fast action.

If you need a screen smaller than 42" that is ultra-thin, LCD is the best choice. LCD displays are better suited for rightly lit rooms so they are a good choice if you do a lot of daytime viewing in a room with windows. LCD TVs are usually more energy efficient than plasma models with the same screen size. Plasma delivers an exceptional picture and provides crisp, brilliant HD performance. Your choice will depend on your budget and television viewing preferences.

There are so many options for a HD TV today: LCD TV, LED TV, 3D TV ? the options can seem endless. Make sure to do ample research and ask around to find out what kind of plasma tv or

Ford Uncovers Bacterial Hot Spots in Cars

Just the Facts:
  • Ford deployed a team of researchers to swab down 10 locations in vehicle interiors and found "significant bacterial growth" in areas including the steering wheel and cupholders, the Dearborn automaker said on Friday in a new report.
  • The area around cupholders was described as "an ideal feeding ground for microbes."
  • Ford is testing coatings that could inhibit or reverse microbial growth in car interiors.

DEARBORN, Michigan ? Ford deployed a team of researchers to swab down 10 locations in vehicle interiors and found "significant bacterial growth" in areas including the steering wheel and cupholders, the Dearborn automaker said on Friday in a new report.

The area around cupholders was described as "an ideal feeding ground for microbes."

High concentrations of bacterial growth were found on steering wheels as well. Ford said it collected samples from a variety of company and employee-owned vehicles. The samples were analyzed at a University of Michigan laboratory.

"We weren't surprised to find microbial hot spots on the steering wheel, since that is where a driver's hands are most of the time," said Cindy Peters, a Ford technical expert, in a statement. "The console area near the cupholders is a common location for spilled drinks, so it provides an ideal feeding ground for microbes."

Ford is testing coatings that could inhibit or reverse microbial growth in car interiors. The automaker said parts coated with paint infused with a silver-ion additive may inhibit microbe growth in cars.

"Parts with the antimicrobial-treated coating are now undergoing real-world testing in a number of Ford development vehicles and the coating is being evaluated for potential use in future Ford vehicle programs," the automaker said.

Edmunds says: In the meantime, you might want to invest in some disinfecting wipes.

'Super storm' Sandy heads toward Northeast coast

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical cyclone Sandy revved back up to hurricane strength on Saturday as it churned toward the U.S. northeast coast where it threatens to become one of the worst storms in decades.

The late-season storm has been dubbed "Frankenstorm" by some weather watchers because it will combine elements of a tropical cyclone and a winter storm and is forecast to reach the U.S. coast close to Halloween.

Forecast models show it will have all the ingredients to morph into a so-called "super storm."

Governors in states along the U.S. East Coast declared emergencies on Friday, with officials urging residents to stock up on food, water and batteries.

The U.S. Navy ordered all ships in the Norfolk, Virginia, area, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, out to sea to ride out the approaching storm.

"We're expecting a large, large storm," said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Environmental Prediction. "The circulation of this storm as it approaches the coast could cover about the eastern third of the United States."

Sandy battered the Bahamas southeast of Florida on Friday after causing widespread destruction in eastern Cuba a day earlier. The storm was expected to crawl northward on Saturday and Sunday and then turn toward the U.S. coast.

Sandy's powerful winds and rains were blamed for 41 deaths in several Caribbean countries, including 11 in Cuba. Most were killed by falling trees and building collapses.

On its current projected track, Sandy could make U.S. landfall on Monday night or Tuesday somewhere between North Carolina and southern New England, forecasters said.

The storm has the potential to cause widespread power outages and to unleash flooding and even dump snow as far inland as Ohio. It also threatens to disrupt air travel along the U.S. East Coast.

At 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT), Sandy was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and packing top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

It had earlier dropped just below hurricane strength but little overall change on strength was expected ahead of its anticipated U.S. landfall early next week, the Miami-based Hurricane Center said.

The storm picked up a little forward speed overnight but was still moving slowly over the Atlantic at 10 mph.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The massive storm has continued to grow in size with tropical force winds extending 450 miles from its center, government forecasters said.

Coming in the final weeks before the U.S. presidential election on November 6, the storm was presenting a challenge to the campaigns of U.S. President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Romney canceled a rally scheduled for Sunday evening in Virginia Beach, Virginia, while Obama's re-election campaign announced that Vice President Joe Biden had also canceled a Saturday trip to that city.

Ahead of the election, millions of Americans are taking advantage of early voting arrangements to cast their ballots. State officials said they had put in place contingency plans in case Sandy caused extended power outages or other problems that could disrupt voting.

In New York City, officials were considering shutting down the country's largest mass transit system because they were worried the storm's impact could cause flooding or high winds that might endanger subways and buses.

Much of Florida's northeast coast was under a tropical storm warning and storm warnings and watches extended up the coast through most of South Carolina and North Carolina.

Along North Carolina's Outer Banks, which jut out into the Atlantic, vacationers in large camper trailers and motor homes streamed off the barrier islands.

Many forecasters are warning that Sandy could be more destructive than last year's Hurricane Irene, which caused billions of dollars in damage across the U.S. Northeast.

The Justiciary

The Pantheon

Gods rule the cosmos and all that is within. As one of these elite beings how will you run the world? What will you create? (Full Up On Characters)

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.
I made this topic for everyone to view and absorb before I initiate my idea. Anyway allow me to explain.

This is the Justiciary!

It is an organization created and founded by Mathias. Here the first 26 Angels or Archangels as they are called formed a group that provides legal services to any and all creatures of the Middle Realm. Each Archangel or Justiciar (their title) serve as sovereign judges over 26 jurisdictions. Please be mindful, this is NOT a global government! It is merely a group of individuals presenting an invaluable service to any and all that is in need of it. Every Mortal race does have it's own form of government! But for those that could use help in the realm of Law and Order then look no further than the Justiciary!

There will be 26 trial courthouses for each jurisdiction were cases can be brought forth. There are also some multi-courthouses for those special cases that branch across different jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction is named after a letter in the Alphabet. If a court ruling was found unfavorable then present an appeal to the Justiciary then all members will review the ruling and give final judgement on whether the decision stands or is reversed. WARNING: THIS IS THE FINAL RULING! Once they've made a decision it can no longer be appealed!! Should also be known that each member is a very capable fighter but combat is usually for extreme measures.

Without further ado, here are the members! (I have yet to find pictures for all 26 but I am working hard on finding them!) (Also please note this a WIP!) (I still have much to consider but I present it for everyone to observe and comment upon.)

The First Archangel-Mathew

Image

Named after Mathias, Mathew is a devoted and sturdy leader of the Justiciary. Because of his leadership he is known as the Chief Justiciar. He is the sovereign judge of Jurisdiction A (JDA for short).

The Second Archangel-Bartholomew

Image

He is the sometimes brash and impulsive younger brother of Mathew. Despite his hot-headedness he is a brave and loyal member of the Justiciary. He is the sovereign judge of Jurisdiction B (JDB).

The Third Archangel-Adriana

Image

The vibrant and cheerful sovereign judge of Jurisdiction C (JDC). She is known to be very kind and is often eager to accept new challenges.

The Fourth Archangel-Dimitrios

Image

The even-tempered and ever loving sovereign judge of Jurisdiction D (JDD). He is calm and steady and always thinks before he acts. He never likes to do a lot of moving and prefers to stay in one spot and enjoy nature. He has an unique ability to manipulate stone and earth. This has given him the moniker The Angel of Earth.

The Fifth Archangel-Natalina

Image

The very shy and soft-spoken sovereign judge of Jurisdiction E (JDE). She is often very hard to read and prefers to keep to herself but is still a valued and trusted member in the group. She has the ability to manipulate lightning.

The Sixth Archangel-Jasper

Image

The often disinterested and rebellious sovereign judge of Jurisdiction F (JDF). Jasper can be depicted as mean and stand-offish. He doesn't care about others opinions about him and rather let his reputation do the talking. Despite having some manipulation over fire he is very cold at heart.

The Seventh Archangel-Gwendolyn
