VeriFone outs Sail mobile payment system, gives Square the evil eye
VeriFone has decided that calling out claimed security holes and focusing on enterprise-level payment options aren't enough to take on Square. Sail goes more directly for Square's jugular, using its own plug-in dongle to handle major credit card payments in your local coffee shop or a mid-sized outlet. The VeriFone party trick comes through having multiple payment options, where shopkeeps can either choose to pay a flat 2.7 percent cut of every sale, or shell out a $10 monthly fee to lower the transactional take to 1.95 percent. Programming interfaces will let you hook in deals from social networks, too. And as you might expect, the company is still keen to tie Sail to its traditional payment systems, opening the door to NFC readers as well as other payment hardware that isn't quite as mobile. Stores with iPhones will be the only ones using the free Sail mobile apps and readers at first, but Android- and iPad-toting entrepreneurs will have their alternative to Square or PayPal Here as soon as the end of May.

Augmented reality sandbox lets you change the course of rivers, won't get you wet
Ask any kid, playing in the sandbox is fun enough on its own, but too much moisture will turn your grainy playground into a lumpy mess. Researchers at UC Davis have cooked up one solution: an augmented reality sandbox. Much like last year's SandyStation, the project uses a Kinect sensor in conjunction with a digital projector and a bit of software to overlay topographical data and simulated water over a traditional -- and dry -- sandbox. The end result is an augmented environment that can be used to teach geographic, geologic and hydrological concepts. The team hopes the project will help them develop hands-on exhibits for science museums, teaching visitors about contour lines, watersheds, catchment areas and more. Check out the video above for a full demo, or scope out the source below for the technical nitty-gritty.

Chris Christie: 'Not Looking to be Loved'
Jewel Samao/AFP/Getty Images
WASHINGTON, D.C. - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says his record in the Garden State is evidence that divided government doesn't have to mean gridlock, when leaders make the right "tough choices."
At a biannual dinner of Washington's libertarian Cato Institute Friday night, Christie told the crowd it was the duty of lawmakers to tell the truth about the nation's economic problems, or risk lengthening the fiscal fallout.
"When you're looking for love in this job, that's when deficits get run up," Christie said. "When you're looking for love in this job, it's because you can't say no to anything because someone somewhere won't love you if you do."
Christie said he was "not looking to be loved" in his state, recounting his administration's cuts to veterans' programs, education, and public employee benefits; examples of so called "third-rails" in politics. The Republican called the slashed budgets "common sense reforms, but tough ones."
"They said this was going to be impossible to do but we did it," he continued, "And we did it because we went out to the public and we told them why it was so important."
Christie boasted his budget plans eventually drew the support of his democratic-controlled state legislature, including its leadership.
"Don't tell me the American people are not ready to hear the truth. They know our government's out of control, they know our debt and our deficits are out of control. And don't confuse them liking the solution with accepting it."
Christie said when presented with the facts, voters "know in their heart" to accept the right solution.
According to Christie, his administration is set to return $132 billion in budget savings over 30 years, while delivering the first income tax break for New Jersey residents in over a decade.
Friday's event dovetails with speculation that Christie could enter the presidential race as a potential running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney.
For months, the Republican governor had denied calls to enter the GOP primaries, from supporters hoping to draw on his reputation as an outspoken and frank personality.
Christie repeatedly assured speculators he intended to fulfill the rest of his term, set to end in 2014. But in the last few weeks he's confessed he was open to the VP slot; most recently on Monday he told a New Jersey high school class that Romney "might be able to convince me," to share a ticket. Romney, Christie continued, is a "convincing guy."
The governor officially endorsed Romney in October and has campaigned with him across multiple states. Christie did not mention the upcoming election during his speech, and only commented on President Obama briefly.
"I remember Barack Obama talking about the lack of hope and optimism around the country in 2008," he said. "The environment I found myself in, in 2009, was not significantly different. Although he and I find the solutions to that problem in entirely different ways."
The Cato Institute is a think tank focused on individual liberties and free-market economics. The organization's gala gathering that night was to award a Chinese activist, Mao Yushi, with their Milton Friedman Prize for his work advocating a Western-style economy in Beijing.
While the governor's keynote address stayed predominantly on national issues, he did venture into broad foreign policy spurts during his roughly 40 minutes behind the podium. Christie said domestic "political sideshows" threatened to deteriorate America's standing abroad.
"There's no better way to prescribe other societies around the world to become more democratic and more market oriented than to show that our democracy, and our markets, work better than any other system," he said.

Costa launches new safety measures after grounding
ROME (AP) ? Italian cruise line Costa Crociere SpA unveiled new safety measures Saturday following the deadly grounding of its ship off Tuscany, saying it will now have real-time tracking of its ships' routes and will impose limits on its captains' absolute authority.
The measures seek to respond to many of the problems involved in the Costa Concordia disaster: The ship rammed into a reef Jan. 13 after the captain veered off course in an apparent stunt, and then capsized off the island of Giglio, killing 32 people.
Many passengers complained they hadn't received emergency training, even though they had boarded days before. Costa says such training will now be provided before passengers even board, and that a monitoring system will flag passengers who missed out and encourage them to take a make-up session.
Passengers also said the captain delayed the evacuation alarm for nearly an hour after the initial grounding until the ship was listing so perilously that lifeboats couldn't be lowered down.
Costa said new bridge procedures stipulate that the captain isn't the only one who issues orders. Members of his team also take part in making decisions, particularly during special navigation procedures like pulling into port, Costa said.
The Concordia captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest, accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before all passengers had been evacuated. He is accused of taking the ship off its charted course to bring it closer to Giglio in an apparent flyby. He claims the reef he hit ? identified on all tourist maps of Giglio ? wasn't on his nautical charts.
Costa has said Schettino's route change was unknown to the company and unauthorized.
To ensure such a maneuver doesn't happen again, Costa said it was launching a fleet-wide monitoring system that allows the company to follow the routes of its vessels in real-time and pinpoint the exact location of each ship to detect any unexpected changes in course.
The measures were announced Saturday as Costa unveiled the latest addition to its fleet: The ?510-million ($670-million) Costa Fascinosa, with a capacity of 3,800 passengers, is now the largest Italian-flagged cruise ship.
In October, another Costa ship being built by Italian ship maker Fincantieri is due to surpass it with a capacity of 4,928 passengers.
Costa, which is owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp., is Europe's No. 1 cruise operator.
Costa chairman and outgoing chief executive Pier Luigi Foschi said the delivery of the Fascinosa was an important step in the company's recovery from the Concordia disaster and overall economic crisis.
Despite such problems, "Costa has bounced back and booking volumes are back to the same levels recorded this time last year, ahead of our own expectations," Foschi said in a statement.

Black hole emits humongous energy burst (+video)
An unusual brightness, documented by NASA's Chandra telescope appears to be coming from a black hole.
A NASA space telescope has detected an incredible energy burst from a distant black hole, an explosion so intense that it boosted the black hole's X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times, scientists say.
Skip to next paragraph A NASA-hosted news conference in Washington highlights imagery and data captured by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory about the early universe's growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies. The outburst came from a black hole in the spiral galaxy M83, about 15 million light-years away from Earth. Using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers found a new object, called an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), ?that emits more X-rays than most "normal" systems in which a companion star orbits around a black hole or neutron star, the researchers said.
The observations from Chandra spanned several years, and scientists noticed that the ULX in M83 increased its X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times.
This surprisingly sudden brightening is one of the largest changes in X-rays ever seen for this type of object, according to the researchers. In fact, ultraluminous X-ray sources do not typically have periods of dormancy. [Photos: Black Holes of the Universe]
In the accompanying image, the left is an optical view of M83. On the right is a composite image showing X-ray data from Chandra in pink and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope in blue and yellow. The ULX is located near the bottom of the composite image.?
Optical images of the black hole in M83 were taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. These images revealed a bright blue source where the ULX is located during the X-ray outburst. Yet, before the outburst, this blue source cannot be seen, the scientists said.
The discrepancy suggests that the companion to the black hole in M83 is a red giant star that is more than 50 million years old. The mass of this object is less than four times the mass of the sun, and according to theoretical models that predict the evolution of stars, the black hole in M83 should be almost as old as this companion red giant star.
The bright blue emission that could be seen during the X-ray outburst could be the black hole's disk brightening significantly as it acquires more material from its companion star, the astronomers said.
Another strangely behaved ULX from a black hole with an old, companion red giant star was found recently in the galaxy M31. These new discoveries in M83 and M31 show that there could be a population of similar black holes that are older and more volatile, the researchers said.
The mass of the ULX in M83 is estimated to be between 40 to 100 times the mass of the sun.
The astronomers also found that the black hole in this system may have formed from a star surprisingly rich in "metals," or elements that are heavier than helium. Based on previous observations, the ULX is located in a metal-rich region.
Large concentrations of metals increase the rate of mass lost from massive stars, siphoning mass before they collapse. This also decreases the mass of the resulting black hole.
Current theoretical models suggest that in regions highly rich in metals, only black holes with masses less than about 15 times that of the sun should form. As a result, the findings based on the ULX in M83 could dispute these models, the researchers said.
Another plausible explanation is that the black hole is so old that it formed at a time when heavy elements were much less abundant in M83, before metals were sprinkled throughout by later generations of supernovas. Astronomers are also investigating the possibility that the mass of the black hole in M83 is only about 15 times that of the sun.

iPad drag-to-edit keyboard prototype shows Apple how easy it could be (video)
Text editing on the iPad is a bit of a slog unless you have a dedicated keyboard. One Daniel Hooper, however, has a simple but clever idea to fix this: use the keyboard as a pseudo-trackpad. As he shows in the prototype video below, his idea has touchscreen typists just drag one or two fingers along the keyboard to whip through text. Need to select something? Hold the Shift key while you swipe. While the concept is the sort of addition you'd normally only expect to appear in a jailbreak mod, Hooper sees the convenience as worth petitioning Apple directly -- and while there's no guarantee Apple will ever implement it, that he's been told Apple now sees it as a "known issue" suggests that someone in Cupertino is contemplating the possibilities.

Breast Cancer: Mammograms Beat Thermography, Study Says
Breast cancer awareness is huge, and everyone recognizes that a pink ribbon is the symbol for this disease, which affects millions of women, and some men too. Mammograms have long been the best way to detect lumps and cancer for women, although some doctors recommend thermography as a substitution.
New research suggests, however, that thermography actually misses about 50 percent of cancers, and also delivers too many false positives to be accurate, according to Dr. C.M. Guilfoyle, a researcher at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania.
Thermography is a radiation-free screening method, which uses computer software to measure and compare thermal abnormalities in breasts. I essentially creates a breast ?map? to search for signs of developing cancer. The theory for this method of detection is that increased temperature is found in areas with increased blood flow, which could indicate a tumor.
A mammogram, on the other hand, provides an x-ray of the patient?s breast, which can be used detect lumps, or tumors. Researchers evaluated the technique for breast cancer screening using 180 women, who underwent biopsies after they had suspicious findings on other imaging exams. Guilfoyle stated that:
?I think we are still trying to determine the role of thermography as a breast cancer screening tool.?
The technology, marketed as the No Touch Breast Scan, was not able to tell the difference between malignant and benign lesions in most cases. The technology is still evolving, however, and it does have room to improve, given Guilfoyle?s study.
Dr. Kimberly Lovett, an attending physician at Southern California Permanente, and an investigator at the University of California-San Diego Center for Patient Safety, writes about the dangers of online ads by thermography companies, telling people that it is a good substitute, and can be the sole method for detecting breast cancer. Lovett says that:
?I would tell women that thermography continues to be studied, and the technology will hopefully improve over time. However, at this time, thermography should absolutely not be used as an alternative to screening mammogram or as an alternative to breast biopsy in the presence of a positive mammogram.?
Until a thermography method is developed that yields better results, Guilfoyle recommends sticking with a yearly mammogram for breast cancer detection.

Orange UK opens up registration page for Intel powered Santa Clara
So "register your interest" pages aren't usually much to shout about. But, this latest one from Orange UK is a little more interesting. The Orange Santa Clara was announced back in February, and will be the first Intel powered Android device to hit the UK. Today the British carrier has opened up the registration page for the device, while also stating that Santa Clara is just the pre-launch name for the device.
We haven't heard much since the product announcement, besides some sneaky benchmarks taken by someone who got an early hands on. We're pretty intrigued to see just what the Intel Medfield architecture can bring to the table, and judging by this, in the UK at least, we may not be waiting much longer.
