PFT: Utah DT Lotulelei cleared for full workout

Mike Lombardi, Joe Banner, Jimmy HaslamAP

Mike Lombardi was never short on opinions of the Browns personnel when he worked for the NFL Network.

But now that he?s the Browns general manager, he doesn?t have nearly as much to say.

Lombardi hasn?t talked on the record for any of the Browns beat writers since he was introduced at a press conference in January, and as CEO Joe Banner explained to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, that?s not a coincidence.

?I don?t think anybody would deny that whether people are for him or against him, he?s a lightning rod at the moment,? Banner said. ?It attracts a lot of attention and it gets a lot of strong reaction and I think it?s better for us right now and better for him to keep things calm, low-key, focus on his work and then kind of more gradually let that situation take care of itself in terms of his availability to you all.?

Banner said if Browns fans, or reporters, were looking for someone to hold accountable, to send it up the flagpole.

?You can blame me,? Banner said. ?There won?t be a shortage of someone to hold accountable. This is a gradual [process]. I think it makes more sense, obviously from our perspective, to kind of let this happen. Evolve into it, as opposed to jumping into it.

?He?s not going to be hidden. He?s not going to be somebody over time you won?t have an opportunity to talk to. But as I say there are certainly no accountability issues. I?m sitting here and you can hold me accountable for whatever we do. And ultimately whether it?s responsibility because of the people we hired or my own role in decisions that we make, I?m a big boy and I accept that comes with the territory here. You hope that credit comes if you do well too, but the accountability is not going to be anything anybody here is going to shy away from.?

Hiring someone who made a living in the media, and then keeping them from it, is an awkward strategy.

But given the pre-existing relationships there from Lombardi?s days with the old Browns, it?s hard to imagine time healing all old wounds.

Obama?s Betting on Chuck Hagel, Unlike With Susan Rice

As outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta grinned, chuckled, and rocked on the balls of his feet during Monday?s East Room press conference, Chuck Hagel stood stiffly next to him, arms tight by his sides. When President Obama name-checked Panetta, Hagel turned woodenly to look at the man he would succeed.

It won?t be the last time Hagel will be eyes-front in a room looking to test his mettle.

As protestations by senators from both parties evidenced, the former Republican senator from Nebraska won?t ease through the confirmation process the way John Kerry likely will on his way to Foggy Bottom or the way other Obama Senate selections?Hillary Rodham Clinton at State and Ken Salazar at Interior?did. But Hagel, who earned two Purple Hearts in Vietnam, packs political assets that make confirmation likely. And if and when he gets to the Pentagon, Hagel will be well positioned, the White House says, to execute the missions of Obama?s second term, not least of them paring back the defense budget.

Democrats inside and close to the White House say that Hagel?s r?sum? enticed Obama?not just uniformed service in the military and his tenure as an opposition-party senator but also his time as deputy administrator of the Veterans Administration. One senior White House official said that Hagel?s ?expertise and credibility in that community? of veterans was key to Obama?s decision to oversee the windup of two wars.

This profile, along with Hagel?s Capitol Hill service, fueled the White House calculation that he was a cut above two other oft-mentioned candidates?former Defense Undersecretary for Policy Michele Flournoy and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter?and explains why Obama opted to pick this fight with Republicans rather than insisting on U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice at State. The rejection of Rice may have only annealed Obama?s resolve on Hagel, since back-to-back losses on national-security picks would invariably weaken the president. Rice fell, in part, because Republicans criticized her as an overtly political figure, an Obama apparatchik who prioritized electoral considerations above security. Hagel?s r?sum? inoculates him from that allegation.

And, the White House official said, Hagel?s misgivings about the Iraq war, very publicly doubting former President Bush?s casus belli, appealed to Obama, himself an early critic. ?He had the courage to break with his party during the Iraq war and speak out at a time when it took serious guts,? the official said. ?That not only impressed the president, it impressed a lot of people in the country.?

The White House?s plan for getting Hagel to the Pentagon is clear, as it peddled his military service this week assiduously; at Monday?s presser, Obama, Panetta, and CIA Director-designate John Brennan all used the word ?patriot? to describe Hagel. Having largely dispatched with the controversy over his 1998 comment that a Clinton ambassadorial nominee was ?openly, aggressively gay,? the primary line of public argument against Hagel is that he would be insufficiently vociferous in fealty to Israel. In a more subterranean way, there is lingering Republican anger among Hagel?s former colleagues, and those in the foreign-policy industrial complex, over his apostasy on the Iraq war.

Those doubts would prove far more devastating against a nominee with two fewer Purple Hearts. It would be passing hypocritical for senators, not a few of them vulnerable to allegations of chickenhawkishness, to challenge a decorated veteran for lacking either patriotism or fidelity to America?s national-security priorities. Hagel is a member of what the late, Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist Bill Mauldin termed the ?brotherhood of them what has been shot at,? and would be both the first enlisted man and first Vietnam vet to helm the Pentagon.

?He?s got a little bit of kryptonite on him that way,? said one Democrat close to the White House, referring to the fictional element repellent to Superman. Hagel, the Democrat said, ?has got the respect of his former colleagues. Little bit of a hiccup along the way on Israel, but that?s surmountable.?

Although it will likely not assuage Rice?s feelings, Senate Republicans? effective veto of her chances elevates the degree of political difficulty for Republicans who would try to block Hagel. Stymieing a Democrat to block a Republican who cochaired Sen. John McCain?s 2000 presidential campaign would expose GOP senators to charges of obstructionism, a label they prefer to leave to their House counterparts. Further, Obama concluded his personal closeness with Rice worked against her, believing her utility as a proxy for him subjected her to partisan animus. Hagel, while close to Obama and even closer to Vice President Joe Biden, carries no such burden.

In handicapping Hagel?s viability in the Senate, pundits have widely cited his lack of a natural constituency in Washington?not an uncommon dilemma for moderates. Hagel is a Midwest Republican who essentially abandoned his party in 2008, when he was coy about supporting Obama. But concerns over a natural base of support overlook what could be called Hagel?s ?Lexis-Nexis constituency,? the large file of effusive praise that Republicans heaped upon him in the past. Democrats mischievously circulated the pertinent quotes this week.

Hagel is further helped by the fact that those voting on his nomination will be senators, individuals with explicit interest in not setting the precedent of rejecting colleagues or former colleagues anointed for higher office. They rarely do so. According to Senate records, of the nine Cabinet nominees the Senate has rejected, only one, President George H.W. Bush?s pick for Defense secretary, John Tower, served in the upper chamber. Former Sen. Tom Daschle withdrew before the Senate voted on his nomination for Health and Human Services secretary. Tower was undone by reports of tawdry extracurricular activities, odd in a body not known for being above reproach on such matters.

Hagel faces different challenges, including a GOP still adrift on foreign policy after a campaign in which the Republican position was not always coherent. If the party targets Hagel to reassert itself, it does so knowing he?s been shot at before.?

Miner Glass Earth Gold Looks At Franchising Options... | Stuff.co.nz

Glass Earth Gold is seeking to sell franchises within its Central Otago alluvial gold operations, and to make the venture self-funding for further exploration.

Chief executive Simon Henderson said the listed gold explorer had hit its straps with its alluvial operation before Christmas, producing 70 ounces to 80 ounces of gold a week. However, there was room for improvement.

The operation was cashflow positive for paying staff and meeting other overheads, but it could also pay its own way for further exploration in the area if production was raised to 120 ounces a week, Henderson said.

Glass Earth was operating two alluvial washing plants in the Manuherikia Valley, each employing five to seven people. "If we could get another 50 per cent increase in gold we would probably sustain not just the administrative costs and all the wages and salaries, but we would sustain probably all the exploration [in the area]."

Production could be lifted to the 100-ounces-a-week level by better configuration of machinery and better productivity, he added. "There are two big plants operating. They've been operating at about 65 per cent productivity. If we could get up to 85 per cent, we could get that increase in productivity."

Glass Earth is also looking to add two extra alluvial plant machines either through its own backing or by bringing in partners as franchise operators to process deposits in the Central Otago area.

"We're looking to do that [franchise] in the next two to three months. We have two other mining permits with the resources defined and we have two partners willing to do that work." The other permits were in the Ida Valley and Maniototo regions.

This week, Glass Earth, listed on both Toronto and New Zealand exchanges, said it had closed the second tranche of its previously announced private placement to raise C$3.76 million (NZ$4.56m) of gross proceeds to develop gold and silver prospects in the Hauraki region.

The placement is for 18.75 million shares at C16 cents, as well as an option to buy up to the same number for C25c within two years.

In the second tranche, a total of 3,343,750 units had been sold at C16c each for gross proceeds of C$535,000.

The company anticipated closing a final tranche shortly, with agreements for a further C$274,000 received and being processed.

Plex shows off cloudSync, its new online digital movie locker, we go hands-on

Plex shows off cloudSync, its new online digital movie locker at CES

Plex is developing an online content locker system that would enable users to watch videos on the road without the need to have a server left on at home. Plex cloudSync will work by hooking up to a storage service like Dropbox, letting you stream video anywhere you go without having to pull it from your domestic setup. Naturally, the digital locker would retain all of the Plex features you know and love, including using PlexSync to flag content that you want automatically formatted and saved on your mobile device. The company isn't in a position to launch the service just yet, but we got to see an early build in action here at CES.

5 Most Dangerous Water Sports in the World

Having fun in the water is undoubtedly one of the most adventurous activities both kids and adults always appreciate. And for good reason, as Water Sporting offers plenty of ways to have fun, along with developing strength, coordination and fitness. From scuba diving and snorkeling, to windsurfing and aqua-fitness, to kayaking and river rafting, you need to simply have the enthusiasm to plunge into waters and have a wonderful experience of a lifetime. However, among the many types of water sports, there are some that stand aside for being extremely dangerous and risky, which have found their descriptions in our today?s post.

Cliff Jumping

Cliff Jumping or the so-called Tombstoning is definitely not a fun vacation day activity, but a real, competitive and extremely dangerous sport, which sounds like something that you could never do, but for others it?s highly appealing. At the same time we should note that recently, cliff jumping has been in the news unfortunately for all the wrong reasons, as every year many youngsters die or severely injure themselves when diving off rocks and cliffs and most often they do it unaware of water depths.

Said to have been originated in Hawaii in 1770, when the last King of Maui, King Kajekili commanded his men to leap the island of Lanai?s high cliffs and enter the water feet first without splashing so that they could prove not only their courage but skill, cliff jumping is today a thrilling sport for adventure lovers.

There are hundreds of amazing spots all over the world that are blessed with unusual geological formations and breathtaking scenery, but the most famous cliff jumping spots are in Hawaii, Jamaica, Australia and Switzerland. And it?s highly recommended cliff divers to exercise caution and always check water depth to avoid fatalities.

Whitewater Rafting

Dazzling people of all ages and physical abilities, commercial rafting lead by trained guides has been popular for decades. However, though fun and exciting, whitewater rafting, originating to limelight since 1970s, is considered an extreme and dangerous water sport. This proves the fact that serious injuries and even deaths have occurred while rafting (four tourists died on guided trips of the Arkansas River this year).

Whitewater Rafting

Moreover, there are also several other dangers that this or that way associate with rafting. Drowning is perhaps the first danger people think of, so if you are not an experienced swimmer, do not take this sport. Hypothermia ? a point when the body?s internal temperature is below 35?C is another one, which can occur in a matter of moments and cause heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure to increase. Other dangers include equipment failure, dangerous water conditions and sunburns among others. The best way to try this adrenaline-pumping sport is to be safety-conscious and be in good health.

Surfing

Tall, powerful waves that start breaking cleanly over amazing coral reefs when they reach water that?s about 1.3 times their height are what make water sport enthusiasts adore surfing, another popular water sport, which though has the lowest rate of reported injuries is still full of dangers. Like in case of whitewater rafting, drowning while surfing is a possible danger. Another danger of surfing is anything your body can impact other than water, like a reef, sandbar, or rocks. Rip currents also account for many surfing accidents; a rip current is a swift of water which flows from shore out to sea and mostly happens when large quantities of water accumulate near shore due to natural wave action. And least but not last of surfing dangers can cause crowds.

Surfing

I would also like to note an interesting fact about this extreme sport. Most often, when people ask about the dangers of surfing, their first question is usually ?What about the sharks?? Of course, not a bad question if you plan your surfing holidays in ?The Red Triangle,? which goes from Bodega Bay to Monterey Bay to Farallon Islands and is home to many sharks. These dangers similarly refer to kite surfing, windsurfing and other types of surfing.

Scuba Diving

Spectacularly beautiful coral reefs teeming with unique and colorful marine life, crystal clear warm waters and a wealth of shipwrecks and underwater gardens combine to make scuba diving a popular recreational sport among many sports fans around the world. But, let?s not forget that scuba diving is again a dangerous and extreme sport with its own peculiar injuries and potentially life-threatening hazards. It?s logical that most scuba diving dangers stem from the effects of the increased water pressure of the sea environment, but sometimes dangers posed by sea inhabitants and faulty equipment also occur. Dysbarism of ascent (Decompression) and decent (Compression), known as barotraumas, are commonly happened to divers with effects that can range from discomfort and vomiting to paralysis and even death.

Kayaking

Kayaking is indeed a fun sport, but surely not one without several associated risks. So, when taking up this water activity, sports lovers should first learn about its dangers and how to handle them appropriately. While the risk of capsizing may seem like an obvious danger, there are some less obvious dangers that are associated with this water sport. Remember that kayaking requires continuous paddling, so if you are not physically fit, you can exhaust yourself very soon. Make sure to also inspect all your equipments before commencing on a kayaking trip to avoid future dangers. Kayaking on flat water or 3- rapids is truly safe and the real dangers can occur when you start paddling grade 4+ water. The most likely fatal accident is due to hypothermia, following a capsize and subsequent failure to execute a rescue. Studies have shown that most often the victim is paddling alone and carrying no distress signals, or else the whole group of kayakers is in trouble making it impossible for the paddlers to take care of each other.

(AP) ? The world's largest and most powerful atom smasher goes into a 2-year hibernation in March, as engineers carry out a revamp to help it reach maximum energy levels that could lead to more stunning discoveries following the detection of the so-called "God particle."

With the reopening of its $10 billion proton collider in early 2015, the stage will be set for observing more rare phenomena ? and unlocking more mysteries, said James Gillies, chief spokesman for the European particle physics laboratory known as CERN.

The Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border will operate for two more months then shut down through 2014, allowing engineers to lay thousands more superconducting cables aimed at bringing the machine up to "full design energy," Gillies told The Associated Press on Friday.

Physicists at the European Center for Nuclear Research, known by its French acronym CERN, won't exactly be idle as the collider takes a break. There are still reams more data to sift through since the July discovery of a new subatomic particle called the Higgs boson ? dubbed the "God particle ? which promises a new realm of understanding of the universe.

For the next two months, the Large Hadron Collider will be smashing protons with lead ions, then undergo several weeks of testing before it shuts down. The collider launched in September 2008, but had to be switched off just nine days later when a badly soldered electrical splice overheated, causing extensive damage to the massive magnets and other parts of the collider some 300 feet (100 meters) below the ground.

It cost $40 million to repair and improve the machine. Since its restart in November 2009, the collider has performed almost flawlessly and the power produced has been ramped up to ever-new record levels, creating a treasure trove of new data to sift through.

But because of the 2008 accident, the collider could only run at an energy level far below what it was designed to do. To fix that, Gillies said, engineers over the next two years will install 10,000 redesigned superconducting cables that connect between the magnets. That will vastly improve its capacity to simulate the moments after the Big Bang nearly 14 billion years ago.

"It will bring you more collisions. Which means that the more collisions you have, the more likely you are to see rare events," he said. "The Higgs particle was just one of many on the wish list that we'd like to find, so higher energy increases your discovery potential."

'Getting naked' doesn't stress 'Girls'' Dunham

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

The Lena Dunham-created and -starring HBO series "Girls" is pretty divisive as sitcoms go -- people either love it or loathe it. Focusing on the adventures of four young women in New York City, it's tonally very different from the show it's most likely to be compared to -- "Sex and the City" -- and has come under fire for its content and even casting choices.

But that's not something that worries the 26-year-old Dunham.

"I haven't heard about anyone who doesn't like it," chuckled the writer/actress, who appeared on TODAY Tuesday with co-stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirk and Zosia Mamet. (Trivia alert: Most of the ladies have famous parents: Allison's dad is "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams; Kirk's dad drummed for Bad Company and Free; Mamet's dad is playwright/director David Mamet).

As 'Girls' returns, its quirky fashion continues to fascinate

Noted Savannah Guthrie, critics say it's about entitled twentysomethings, who are self-absorbed. But Dunham says her characters are written in shades of gray. "I sort of object to the notion that the characters have to be likable. ... I don't like most of my friends -- I love them, and that's the same way that I feel about characters I write."

"Part of (the appeal) is holding up a very harsh, funhouse-y mirror to people," added Williams. "I don't think people are used to looking at themselves that closely."
